The state Department of Health advised the Northeast District Department of Health and the town early this morning that tests conducted since Wednesday were negative for harmful bacteria including E. coli said Patricia Beckenhaupt the regional health agency’s health director. Restaurants that use municipal water still must flush and sanitize all equipment that had been hooked into the public water supply before warnings about E. coli were issued on Sunday Beckenhaupt said. Residents also may flush their systems for five minutes at most but the entire water system has been flushed and treated and the water is now safe to drink and use for cooking and hygiene Beckenhaupt said. Town water tests done a week ago showed the presence of E. coli and total coliform.

The Sonoma County Water Agency which provides Novato with 80 percent of its water from the Russian River notified its customers this week that storage levels in its tanks are dropping due to a spike in water demand. It urged more conservation. “It’s a serious situation as one of our contractors said one of the worst in the last 25 years” said Brad Sherwood spokesman for the Sonoma water agency. “If supplies continue to drop it will mean water only for health and safety meaning lawns go dead.
