They have both been diagnosed with kidney problems. “It’s kind of odd that two members of the same household basically have the same problem” Johnson said. Both Saythre and Johnson now have state-monitored filters on their water supply. But the main concern for residents is finding the culprit. Bob Bowcock an environmental investigator believes the source of the contamination is Schlumberger an oil field services company. The Early Show asked Schlumberger for comment and the company said in a statement: “Chromium has not been used in any of the processes performed at the Schlumberger facilities in Midland Texas and independent water samplings indicate that the source is likely an adjacent site unrelated or our facilities. No lawsuits have been filed and the state is still investigating.

comp –> Two infants who died and one who was sickened at Miami Children’s Hospital in March were infected with a common yet deadly bacteria a county health department investigation concluded Wednesday. The infections occurred in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where premature and severly ill infants are cared for. The Miami-Dade Health Department report traced the bacteria Psudomonas aeruginosa to the unit’s water supply and said the hospital lacked policies for routine inspections of plumbing did not systematically flush the system and didn’t take part in the county’s twice-yearly free chlorine purge program that is aimed at cutting such infections. The bacteria is widespread in nature and found in water soil plants and animals and can be deadly to infants with compromised immune systems. The two who died and one who was sickened all were born extremely prematurely. The bacteria’s spread in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was wider than initially reported infecting 14 of 36 infants although none besides the three became ill the report said. The report recommends that the hospital initiate monthly checks of water quality train its staff in infection control closely monitor chlorine levels and use the county’s twice-yearly chlorine purge.

EPA inspectors questioned him after discovering the well water could be pumped untreated into the village’s distribution system. Nine days after the Tribune’s investigation was published Robert Stranczek and his lawyer gave Madigan’s office a chart confirming the newspaper’s account of how much water the village had drawn from the well. The monthly amount ranged from about 3 percent to as high as 20 percent of Crestwood’s total water supply. In an April 24 interview with the Tribune Stranczek acknowledged he has known about the use of the well since at least 1997 when he became a village trustee. He was appointed mayor in 2007 when his father retired. Efforts to reach the Stranczeks and Scaccia for comment about the lawsuit were not successful but in a statement the village said Crestwood’s drinking water always was safe to drink. “The village has been closely cooperating with the Illinois EPA in its investigation and it will continue to do so” it said.

Work under way at the dam will allow a permanent year-round flow to start in ctober for the first time since the dam was built in the 1920s. The spawning seasons for steelhead and chinook salmon don’t correspond to the spill season when river flows are higher. The PUD will supply higher flows that fish need by pumping water to the head of the new channel. Work began on the project last June. It’s part of the utility’s new 50-year federal license to operate Lake Chelan Dam. —Information from: The Wenatchee World.
