A ministry spokeswoman said they are monitoring the spill but not formally investigating it. ?We will continue to ensure the company takes all reasonable and responsible measures to contain the spill? spokeswoman Kate Jordan said adding that the ministry is focusing on what effect the spill may have on downstream drinking-water sources. Municipalities that draw drinking water from the Deep River water treatment plant have temporarily closed their intakes Jordan said but she could not say which municipalities would be affected. Renfrew County?s health unit is also monitoring the spill and will update rural residents if there are any issues regarding the safety of their well water. The City of Pembroke say they expect the spill to arrive in the Pembroke area around noon Friday but they do not expect that it will have any impact on the city?s drinking water. ?In the unlikely event of a water intake closure water will be supplied to residents from the Quarry Road reservoir and the Bell Street water tower? states a city press release. Discounts will be provided to participants meeting agreed-upon environmental stewardship objectives. In a statement to the participating water providers Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger applauded their decisions to join the project: “I applaud the leadership of these Southern California water agencies who are helping address the state’s water supply challenges by exploring a path-breaking new sustainable groundwater conservation and storage project. This innovative project utilizing sophisticated water conservation practices will sustainably recover more than one million acre feet of water that would otherwise be lost to evaporation and make it available to help provide a reliable source of water for Southern California. All Californians who care about our state’s economic future and job creation should follow the lead of these water suppliers and examine smart and sustainable ways to conserve every last drop of water. ” With the State of California suffering the effects of a severe long-term water shortage Governor Schwarzenegger declared a “state of emergency” in February and deliveries to local agencies from the State Water Project have been cut to 40 percent of capacity. n June 1 the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power imposed mandatory rationing cutting water allocations to its customers by 15 percent.

The project will divert rooftop downspouts to lawns and landscaped areas rather than letting them collect pollution from streets and sidewalks and run into storm drains — which should prevent 650 pounds of nitrogen 98 pounds of phosphorus and 11 tons of sediment from reaching local streams. The Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education received $312177 to help stop runoff in the same region from compacted soils in parks school yards athletic fields residential lawns and vacant lots in the city and county. The group will employ a type of deep tilling to break up soil allowing more water to soak in. Also the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts was awarded $345000 to work with farms to implement trading options to reduce carbon emissions and nutrients and the University of Maryland and other universities won $786384 to address dry manure application in seven watersheds including the Choptank and the Nanticoke rivers.
