Water Services cleans system to ensure quality water supply
Desert Valley Times
Flushing is a process by which the water is moved through the water pipes at a high velocity so that a scouring action is created. Water is then discharged through a hydrant which in turn removes any material build-up from the pipe. The material removed from this process is harmless and requires no special treatment. Because the water mains are sized to allow adequate and safe flows for fire protection water is typically moving through the underground pipes at a low velocity. This slow movement allows mineral deposits to build up and accumulate in the pipes over time. This buildup can restrict the flow of water in the pipes and contributes to corrosion water color problems and inadequate fire flow. Periodic flushing of the water pipes removes the mineral deposits which helps maintain the city’s infrastructure assures consistent high-quality water and improves fire flows throughout the system.

Nevada wants delay on tapping Snake Valley water

Nevada’s state engineer already has approved a 78000 acre-foot drawdown from four counties in the central part of the Silver State. The water agency has about 8000 acre-feet in water rights on ranches it bought and has a commitment from another county for water once the pipeline is built. An acre-foot is about 327000 gallons enough to cover an acre of ground with a foot of water or supply one or two households for a year. Under federal law Utah and Nevada must negotiate a water-sharing agreement before SNWA can build the 285-mile pipeline for an estimated $3.
