Water Main Mess Disrupts Weekend Traffic

He also said it won’t be easy to figure out exactly how much damage the break caused. “When the water main breaks and the water comes up and it starts filling in and the pressure will start peeling the asphalt away from the concrete and that’s what makes it pop” ‘Bryan said. Friday morning at UN workers had to shut off the water supply to the Milo Bail student center. This forced the closure of the center’s kitchen where 2500 students usually eat. The estimated loss of revenue according to Mike Malone of UN’s Food Services stood at about $8000. “There’s nothing hot coming out of the kitchen nothing we can prepare. So we had to shut down preparation” Malone said.

5) meeting of the Placer County Water Agency Board of Directors. Just one month ago water content had been measured at 57 percent of average. Nichol said the Grass Valley-based Nevada Irrigation District has reported water storage at 66 percent of capacity and 97 percent of average for this time of year and that further north Bullards Bar Reservoir is at 102 percent of average storage.
Reducing risks to the water supply

A qualified water well system contractor can determine if your water well system needs cleaning. Well owners should test annually for bacteria nitrates and anything of local concern. The water should be tested more frequently if there is: Any change in the water’s taste odor or appearance; A problem such as a broken well cap or a new contamination source; A family member or houseguest who has recurrent incidents of gastrointestinal illness; A pregnant woman or infant living in the home; A dangerous contaminant shows up in your neighbors’ water; or A need to monitor the efficiency and performance of home water treatment equipment. Contaminants of local concern may include landfills industrial sites hazardous substance spills or improper disposal of hazardous household wastes. Some naturally occurring contaminants such as arsenic and radon are area specific. To determine what might be of local concern ask a qualified local water well system contractor or water treatment company a certified water testing laboratory or local health or environmental health officials. When seeking a qualified water testing lab contact your state or local health department or check the “Water Quality” section of NGWA’s Web site www.
Alarm rising over drought’s threat to coastal drinking water supplies
Palm Beach Post
The severe drought has hit hardest in eastern Palm Beach County which has seen 82 percent less rain this winter. "We're not proposing new restrictions" said Chip Merriam deputy executive director of water resources at the South Florida Water Management District. "But we want to make sure that everyone understands that we are concerned and we need to be very frugal with our water supplies. "District leaders remain concerned about salt water from the ocean invading coastal drinking water wells. Areas prone to saltwater invasion including Lake Worth Lantana Dania Beach and Hallandale Beach now remain under special one-day-a-week restrictions while the rest of the region is on the current twice-a-week sprinkler schedule. For now a higher-than-normal Lake keechobee gives water managers an advantage they did not have during the long-running drought that ended last summer: They have the ability to move water through South Florida's sprawling network of canals and into the Everglades conservations areas which serve as the region's main reservoir.
US to test local wells for traces of uranium

But most states began closely monitoring it in public drinking supplies only about five years ago after the US Environmental Protection Agency set new limits and monitoring requirements for the heavy metal. Since then more than 70 public water systems in Massachusetts New Hampshire and Connecticut have been found to exceed the EPA threshold for uranium consumption which is 30 parts per billion. Most of those problems have been resolved by treating the water or by switching water supplies but the discoveries have raised concerns about broader uranium contamination. Some environmental officials are worried about what’s not being tested: the water consumed by the more than 2. 5 million people in New England – 400000 in Massachusetts – who get drinking water from private supplies. Those supplies are governed by a patchwork of legal rules that often leave testing up to the owner. The US Geological Survey is launching the home water sample study which also is examining naturally occurring arsenic to help figure out where future public water supplies should – and should not – be located.

“Although the weather pattern moved storms in from the Pacific high and low pressure systems created a doughnut hole over the central mountains and prevented a great deal of moisture from falling in central Idaho” said Ron Abramovich NRCS Water Supply Specialist. “Parts of eastern Idaho received more precipitation but a good month of precipitation across the state would help improve this year's water supply. ” Most of Idaho received below normal precipitation in January and February. The central Idaho mountains received the least precipitation at 45-50 percent of average.
