Freshwater Rising in Strategic Importance

TheWorld Economic report says that there is a need to use water much moreefficiently. But while worries over water are global in nature the reportconcludes that solutions may have to be local since “transporting water overlong distances is not economically feasible. ” Some countries with a history ofwater shortages such as those in the Middle East have tailored their energyindustry to continually reuse water supplies. Energyproduction may also feel the squeeze from agriculture which is the world’slargest water consumer. And with a fast growing world population agriculture’sshare of water use is expected to increase. Christophsays that while the energy industry is being made more “climate friendly” itshould not be made more “water thirsty.
Recent storms not enough to replenish water supply amid drought

f primary concern to climate watchers is the Sierra snowpack an important predictor of water supply for the coming year. When the snow melts in the spring it provides much of the fresh water for the state's rivers that flow into the Delta and feed the State Water Project which travels 444 miles to its end at Lake Perris. Late last year the Department of Water Resources announced that water agencies in the state would get just 15 percent of the supplies they requested from the State Water Project; it was the second lowest preliminary allocation ever. fficials said the amount might be increased if 2009 proved to be a wet year or cut if the year turned out to be another dry one. fficials on Friday will discuss a possible change to the allocation Lynn said. The Central Valley Project allocation for San Joaquin Valley farmers also will be announced. The National Weather Service is predicting possible light showers in Southern California starting Sunday with several days of heavier rain in Northern California.

Senator Hollingsworth Republicans call for appeal on water …

Issue 08 Volume 13. SACRAMENT Last week Senator Dennis Hollingsworth (R-Murrieta) and 27 Republicans sent a letter to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger urging him to call upon the President and the Secretary of the Interior to convene the Endangered Species Committee. The letter requests an appeal of water restrictions on California as mandated by federal court rulings to protect the Delta smelt. “Every drop of water is a valuable commodity in California and it is crucial that we protect what little we have” stated Senator Hollingsworth. “We are not only facing a natural drought but one that is court-imposed which will only worsen our current economic situation and impact many California communities and farmers who are already facing severe water restrictions. “Under the provisions of a 1978 amendment of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) a committee comprised of seven Cabinet level members called the Endangered Species Committee can be convened to hear exemptions from the ESA’s stringent provisions. The plea to lift the water restrictions complies with the exemption requirements in that there is no reasonable alternative to the agencies’ action and that the action is of extraordinary regional importance.
