California’s Water Problems Weren’t Caused By a Fish: We Need a …
Huffington Post NY
We hope that the Department is right that current operations will prevent significant numbers of longfin smelt from being sucked into the pumps and we expect that DFG will closely monitor the situation and take prompt action in future weeks if there is a problem. But whether today or a month from now there’s a good chance that restrictions will be imposed to prevent a problem from occurring whether because of longfin smelt or because of one of the other endangered and threatened fish that the pumps put at risk. Today’s action is a reminder that our water resources are fragile and we need to continue to invest in new ways to replenish our water supply without relying on the Delta. In fact reductions of water exports from the Delta are inevitable. In the early 2000s water exports were at historically high levels (5 of the 6 highest levels of water exports in the history of the CVP and SWP occurred in the past 8 years). For the foreseeable future we’re likely to have to return to water export levels seen in the 1990s. Bottom line: California is at a crossroads; it can either follow its old course toward drought failed crops failing fisheries and an insufficient drinking water supply – or it can commit to a new smart-water solution for the 21st century.

“We also recommended that homes and businesses purge any standing or stagnant water from their system when our system started back up” she said. Pipes flushedWeston said the Corps of Engineers had complied and flushed out all the water pipes in the three-story building after the storm. He said no trouble with the water supply was detected at that time. 12 while conducting a check of the building’s sprinkler system the maintenance team noticed some “leaky pipes” on the ground floor and decided to test the water he said. Weston also is having the small chillers on the air-conditioning unit checked for the bacteria since it could be an aerosol source. Water pipes at the corps’ headquarters will be flushed with chemicals to eradicate the problem over the weekend he said.

” He said the caterpillars started showing up sometime during the week of January 12 but spread quickly moving to 50 villages in just a week. The pests multiply rapidly and adult moths are able to fly long distances at night the FA said. Worsening the situation the area’s water supply has been contaminated by the huge volume of feces dropped by the caterpillars the FA said. The Liberian government and the FA are working on ways to battle the outbreak with pesticides Hammond said. Aerial pesticides can be effective in some areas but Hammond said it could further contaminate the country’s water supply. Hand-spraying has also failed to work because the caterpillars dwell on the leaves of giant forest trees which can tower 8 meters — about 26 feet — above the ground the FA said.
Water Plan Came After Much Study By Utility
Washington Post United States
Under the proposal which needs approval from regulators the agency eventually would store 8 billion gallons of water in four quarries after Luck Stone the company that owns them is finished mining them. The first quarry would be converted in 2017 after construction of a water treatment plant nearby said utility officials who did not have an estimate of when the others would become available. Loudoun Water serves about 55000 customers in eastern Loudoun. As early as 2001 officials at the agency discussed "water banking" or storing water for use during times of scarcity said Loudoun Water spokeswoman Samantha Villegas adding that the drought of 2007 provided additional impetus to look into storage options. The utility can purchase up to 50 million gallons of water a day from Fairfax County and up to 7 million a day from Fairfax City under agreements with those jurisdictions. But based on Loudoun’s projected growth the utility estimates it will need to supply 40 million more gallons a day by 2035.

Western Municipal Water District could follow suit. The two districts cover most of western Riverside County. Local water agencies have been ramping up their conservation efforts as California's drought worsens. The state water supply has shrunk due to below-average-rainfall diminishing mountain snow packs attributed to climate change and a court order that slashes water releases from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta the hub of the state's water supply to protect endangered fish. fficials with Metropolitan Water District of Southern California the largest water wholesaler in the region have said there is a 50 percent chance they will cap deliveries to local water agencies this year and have pressured those agencies to adopt restrictions. Town of Menasha residents who have a Neenah mailing address also received the notices by mistake. The notices do not apply to the town’s water supply. Larry Wettering Neenah’s director of public works and utilities said six of 30 samples taken at city residences in November exceeded the maximum contaminate level for lead of 15 parts per billion. ne sample registered 105 ppb but that was considered an anomaly.
