Proposed Gas Drilling Upstate Raises Concerns About Water Supply

Upstate the push by energy companies to explore drilling under a broad swath of western and southern New York State have provoked alarm and protest among environmentalists and others. But in New York City opponents say that city residents and leaders have been slow to react despite New Yorkers’ stake: not only do many have weekend homes but the area under consideration for drilling includes the watershed that supplies most of the city’s drinking water. “In the absence of a real rallying cry coming from the city to vigorously protect the water supply we’re going to get rolled” said James F. Gennaro of Queens chairman of the Council’s environmental committee which has been holding the hearings.

Water supply has also been disrupted in several areas in North Trinidad due to the torrential rains which began on Thursday and continued yesterday in Diego Martin Las Cuevas Petit Valley Maraval Maracas Santa Cruz and St Joseph. The ffice of Disaster Preparedness and Management (DPM) yesterday warned of more rainfall as it mobilised its first-response network that includes the Ministry of Local Government regional corporations Ministry of Works and Transport and the Defence Force First Engineer Battalion. “Teams from these agencies have been deployed to assist in clean-up operations” the DPM stated. The Express understands that crews from the Community Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (CEPEP) were also on standby awaiting instructions to assist in any clean-up operations in the Diego Martin area. The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) stated yesterday that in “the most severe case” operations at its Maraval Waterworks were curtailed due to damage sustained at the plant following yesterday’s rains.

Newsom signs bill for water system upgrade

Mayor Gavin Newsom signed a bill Friday that appropriates $1. 9 billion for the $4. 4 billion Water System Improvement Program which was passed by voters. City officials say the money approved Friday will be used to build pipelines tunnels pump stations and dams in six Bay Area and Central Valley counties over the next 18 months.

06 million construction contract awarded Thursday (Dec. 18) by the Placer County Water Agency Board of Directors. The board approved the contract with Doug Veerkamp General Engineering Inc. of Placerville who submitted the lowest among nine bids received by the agency.
