Arizona’s water and power supplies intertwined
Arizona Republic AZ
Geological Survey estimates that generating electricity accounts for almost half the nation’s annual water use – and water systems use energy to treat and distribute supplies. It’s not always an equal division of resources. It usually takes more electricity to supply water than it takes water to generate electricity especially in Arizona and the arid West. Most of the water used at non-hydroelectric plants helps cool the system or produce steam to turn turbines. Power plants with the biggest water demands often return the water to its source – a lake or river – with only some losses mostly to evaporation. In Arizona where power plants lack direct water sources closed cooling systems recycle the water multiple times.

LAKE LANIER: Coalition plans to bolster state’s stake in water war
Atlanta Journal Constitution  USA
Lake Lanier is the primary source of drinking water for metro Atlanta. Kit Dunlap vice president of the coalition said a previous study of the lake focused on recreation. “We want a very comprehensive study to show … the value of Lake Lanier in terms of water supply power generation and then certainly recreation. ” Also Dunlap said the lake’s management could be improved to keep the lake at full pool as much as possible. She estimated an impact study would cost $200000. The coalition hopes to raise $700000 over three years for other efforts including a public relations campaign to debunk what the group says are myths about Atlanta’s water consumption. “Metro Atlanta is the only area in this battle with Alabama Georgia and Florida that’s actually conserving water” Dunlap said.

Most parts of Harare have gone without water for months resulting in residents without boreholes digging shallow wells for drinking and bathing water. GA_googleFillSlot(“AllAfrica_Story_Inset”);The result has been an outbreak of diseases especially cholera that has killed over 500 people. Intermittent water supplies have largely been blamed on ageing pumps at Morton Jaffray Waterworks which the Government tackled by replacing old pumps with new ones. When the nation thought the problem had been addressed a new problem in the form of a shortage of treatment chemicals emerged.

Preston Howard a lobbyist for the Manufacturers and Chemical Industry Council of North Carolina which represents large industries said the group is reviewing the recommendations and hasn’t yet taken a position. rawlins@newsobserver.

Since our bodies don’t absorb a hundred percent of the drugs we take we naturally excrete the excess when we urinate. Many Americans flush unused prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs down the toilet. Wastewater treatment plants do a poor job of capturing these chemicals before the water is either sent back out to its original source or cycled back into a region’s water supply. The wildlife impact of these pharmaceuticals – which also include narcotics birth control drugs and antidepressants – is reported in Big Green Purse: Use Your Spending Power to Create a Cleaner Greener World. Geological Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency notes the book have found fish frogs and other aquatic animals sporting both male and female sex organs freaks of nature attributed primarily to the rising drug levels being measured in rivers lakes and streams.
