Truckee Carson Irrigation District indicted
San Jose Mercury News USA
attorney for eastern California said the four allegedly were part of a scheme to inflate data from 2000 through 2005 regarding the efficiency of the district’s water deliveries so as to secure additional water credits from the bureau to boost supplies primarily for Nevada farmers and ranchers. Under a contract with the Bureau of Reclamation the district operates the irrigation system in northern Nevada’s Newlands Project created more than a century ago. As part of a water efficiency incentive policy adopted in 1988 the bureau agreed to provide credits to the district that would allow it to boost its share of water supplies from area dams and reservoirs owned by the bureau. The 10-count indictment handed up Wednesday accuses Overvold McConnell Shelby Cecil 65 and John Baker 63 all of Fallon of inflating those efficiency rates in part by Advertisement yld_mgr. place_ad_here(“adPosBox”); recording water deliveries that were not made and tampering with water meters that recorded water flow data. The indictment said the four “knowingly combined conspired and agreed among themselves.

Recycled drinking water gives new meaning to bottoms up!

Last January Orange County launched its $490 million water purification process to begin creating drinkable water from waste water. The Orange County Groundwater Replenishment Project uses reclaimed wastewater to recharge the drinking water aquifer with a more advanced treatment of wastewater using a three prong water purification process which includes micro-filtration reverse osmosis ultraviolet light and hydrogen peroxide that treat the water to very high levels that meet state and federal drinking water standards before the highly treated water is returned to the groundwater basin. In the basin the treated water blends with other waters and is buffered with natural minerals before it enters the local drinking water supply. The water produced out of the GWR System is not similar to other recycled water. Because the treated water meets and exceeds all federal and California state drinking water standards it is the highest quality water of all sources in Orange County. The water has already been treated twice by the Orange County Sanitation District before it hits the Groundwater Replenishment process. Other water systems in this country don’t treat wastewater to this high level of quality.
Dye tests may find source of bad water

It’s been more than a week since a high concentration of bacteria was found in the well which services the residents of about 40 homes in the rental community owned and operated by KH Real Estate. Last week DEP took lab samples from the water which tested positive for fecal contamination after several people in the community were hospitalized with intestinal illnesses. story continues below DEP officials returned to the community Tuesday to continue their investigation of the bacterial contamination of the water supply there. The department hopes by tracing the paths of dyes that were placed into the system they can locate the source of the bacteria. “We are continuing to monitor the level of bacteria and will re-evaluate the system when those test results are available” said DEP Southwest Regional Director Kenneth Bowman. “At this time we have not pinpointed the source of the contamination but the high level of fecal coliform in the water supply suggests that the water has come in contact with untreated sewage. ” DEP reminded residents that the do-not-use the water advisory remains in effect.

There are not sufficient safe sources of drinking water. This has become an incredible breeding ground for cholera. In fact many high-density areas of Harare have been without water for several months already. For example in the Mabvuku and Tafara areas in the east of Harare supplies started becoming erratic a year ago.

Hendricks said thanks to good rains there was currently enough water in South Africa’s dams and aquifers “to provide sufficient water for the growing economy”. She warned that the biggest threat to future supply in the Vaal region was not water security but pollution from illegal discharges of sewage and waste into rivers and streams. Her department was working with local municipalities to upgrade their waste water treatment plants. An amount of R350-million had been made available for this. Hendricks said final go-ahead for Phase II of the LHWP was “subject to the conclusion of a protocol with the government of Lesotho”. Tenders for the project would be handled by the Lesotho Highlands Water Commission which manages the LHWP.
