AfDB loans Zanzibar $41.8m for water supply
ThisDay, United Republic of Tanzania
2m loan from the African Development Fund, the concessionary window of the AfDB Group, and 3. 14m euros from the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) Trust Fund, will be used to finance institutional development support, rural and urban water supply and sanitation as well as water resources management components of the project over four years. The project aims at improving water supply and sanitation services in rural and urban communities through integrated water resources management with a view to improving the health and social well-being of the people through equitable provision of adequate water and sanitation services at affordable cost and on a sustainable basis. ’’The target beneficiaries of the proposed project will be the urban areas of Chake Chake, Wete, and Mkoani with a total urban population of 70,832 and nine rural areas in Unguja and Pemba with 95,214 people,’’ said a statement issued by AfDB. In addition, 276,000 students from the rural schools in Unguja and Pemba will benefit from the schools’ water and sanitation activities. On completion, the project is expected to bring general improvements in public health within the project areas, curtail water-borne diseases, and ensure environmental sustainability. It will also help in the eradication of poverty and contribute towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

Public Agencies Oppose New Threat to Statewide Water Supply
MarketWatch
The Commission will consider these proposed regulations, which public water agencies consider a major potential threat to statewide water supply, in a hearing this Friday. The California Department of Water Resources estimates these restrictions could reduce water supplies by approximately one (1) million acre-feet in wet and average year conditions and by 600,000 acre-feet in dry conditions from both the State Water Project (SWP) and federal Central Valley Project (CVP). In average year conditions, these constraints represent approximately 17% of anticipated supply for the two projects, which serve as California’s primary water delivery systems. These proposed restrictions are in addition to severe cutbacks already imposed to address the decline of another similar fish species, the Delta smelt. Last year, a federal judge cut 660,000 acre-feet from the water system, a 31% reduction that could have served 5. 3 million Californians for one year.

Landrieu’s office already has “authorized” but not “appropriated,” or secured, more than $20 million in federal funds toward finishing the study and beginning construction. Stephanie Allen, a Landrieu spokeswoman, said the senator was optimistic about getting the funds locked up. “Senator Landrieu is continuing to work with governments in the Shreveport area on water supply initiatives. She (Landrieu) has requested money in the past and will continue to work to so… She (Landrieu) has requested money in the past and will continue to work to so. “Wilson said federal funds would greatly help the process. He added that even if area governments did not receive any money, there were still other ways of raising funds, such as the creation of new utility tax districts across one or both parishes to generate funds. Wilson said it made for sense for local governments to cooperate with each other, for both funding and water. “We’re all fighting for the same limited resources,” Wilson said.
