Public Agencies Oppose New Threat to Statewide Water Supply
MarketWatch
The Commission will consider these proposed regulations, which public water agencies consider a major potential threat to statewide water supply, in a hearing this Friday. The California Department of Water Resources estimates these restrictions could reduce water supplies by approximately one (1) million acre-feet in wet and average year conditions and by 600,000 acre-feet in dry conditions from both the State Water Project (SWP) and federal Central Valley Project (CVP). In average year conditions, these constraints represent approximately 17% of anticipated supply for the two projects, which serve as California’s primary water delivery systems. These proposed restrictions are in addition to severe cutbacks already imposed to address the decline of another similar fish species, the Delta smelt. Last year, a federal judge cut 660,000 acre-feet from the water system, a 31% reduction that could have served 5. 3 million Californians for one year.
ADWR rules on Prescott assured water supply

The ADWR decision includes approval of about 8,000 acre-feet of groundwater from the Big Chino Water Ranch. The two communities plan to build a pipeline from the Paulden-area Big Chino Water Ranch to import water from the Big Chino sub-basin.
WATER WAR: Governors trade jabs at conference

In Georgia, “you have a … pristine undeveloped coastline with marshes there that people love to look out on,” he said Wednesday. “And then I come to Florida and I see the developed coastline all the way around from Jacksonville all the way up to Tallahassee, I really wonder how we can be preached at as Georgians over environmentalism and water. ” The Atlanta area’s main water supply is Lake Lanier, which also provides flow into the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basin. For years, Florida and Alabama have accused Georgia of withholding too much water from Lanier, drying up river flows into their states that support power plants, industrial users like paper mills and the oyster and shrimp industries in Florida’s Apalachicola Bay. As a record drought threatened drinking water supplies last year, Georgia pressed the federal government for more, arguing that its needs are more pressing than the other states’. Florida, however, has fought Georgia and argues that the water withdrawals also are hurting the environment, including rare mussels and sturgeon. Perdue, who was attending a Republican Governors Association conference, also said Florida should just say what their argument is really all about: answering to the area’s commercial fishing industry.
Broken water main, valve foul up evening commute
San Diego Union Tribune, United States
In Rolando, the force of the water buckled a section of pavement about 10 feet wide on El Cajon Boulevard east of Rolando Boulevard, Water Department spokesman Arian Collins said. The water flowed into a storm drain and did not flood any businesses or homes, he said. However, when crews shut off water to the broken main, the water supply was cut off to shops along El Cajon Boulevard and residences on some side streets, he said. San Diego police closed eastbound lanes between Rolando Boulevard and Montezuma Road. Collins said it could take 16 to 18 hours to complete repairs to the water main and to lay temporary pavement. Meanwhile, a blown water valve under eastbound lanes of Torrey Pines Road sent water to the surface shortly before 5:30 p.

Reddy launches daily water supply programme

Speaking on the occasion, Reddy said the total daily water supply will be 328 MGD which benefits 3. 6 lakh connections in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. The water supply in 2004 was 134 million gallons per day, he said. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) plans to augment water supply further, with river Godavari as a source to provide 510 MGD in three phases for daily water supply to all GHMC areas. Meanwhile, Union Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy commissioned the works of Ring Main-II of Krishna water project.
Squeamish opposition to a treated supply

Coominya is typical of many once quiet rural backwaters that are booming as the population of southeast Queensland continues to skyrocket. Although Coominya residents can see Wivenhoe Dam from their verandas, they, like tens of thousands of other southeast Queenslanders, manage adequately with rainwater tanks because they are not connected to a town water supply. The water histories of Atkinson Dam and Coominya say much about the debate over whether water supplies to Australia’s fastest-growing region should be augmented by recycled industrial effluent and sewage. The Queensland Government insists that when 60 million litres of recycled waste water a day are pumped to Wivenhoe Dam starting in February or March, rising to 230 megalitres later next year, it will be safer than presently available water after being going through a seven-stage treatment process. Critics say there is a risk of viruses, bacteria and chemicals entering the drinking supply and that recycled water should be used only as a last resort. The safety debate aside, the key question the Government struggles to address is whether it is necessary to use recycled water at this time. Says Canberra Hospital microbiologist Peter Collignon: "I’m not against drinking recycled water.
