Flemington likely to get more water exemptions
ABC Online, Australia
The Opposition says Flemington’s exemption to use fresh water expires in December, placing its water supply in doubt. The Racing Minister, Rob Hulls, says he expects the racecourse to receive a further exemption. “Clearly the Spring Carnival at Flemington is a huge attraction for the city and is obviously a major tourist event, and these matters, I expect, will be taken into account by City West Water,” he said. California needs water, stands to face rationing
China Post, Taiwan
5 million residents and 750,000 acres of farmland, the Department of Water Resources said yesterday. A wetter winter with more snow in the Sierras could lead California water regulators to increase supplies. In 1993, the state anticipated withholding a record 90 percent of deliveries but didn?t have to restrict any after conditions improved. California began delivering water through the State Water Project in 1957.

Drop off old pharmaceuticals to help keep lake water safe
Chicago Sun-Times, United States
Chicago is the first city to try such a program. An Associated Press report in March said pharmaceuticals have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans. The city of Chicago says its drinking water is safe and meets all U. and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency standards. But Jerri Garl of the U.

Contaminated water lands 176 in hospital
Times of India, India
Of these, at least 70 are
suspected to be suffering from diarrhoea. On October 8, TOI had
highlighted how those living in Mohali were being supplied with filthy water
infested with lizards and dead rodents. The issue was brought to the notice of
minister for water supply and sanitation Bikram Majithia, who assured strict
action. However, with no steps being taken to ensure supply of clean water, many
innocent residents were admitted to various hospitals, including GMH-16 in
Chandigarh and the local civil hospital, on Sunday. The district health
authorities have now sounded an alert in all hospital across the
district. Talking to TOI, the villagers said they had been supplied
with water from a storage tank in Sialva village. ??After consuming
water, many people complained of vomiting and dysentery on Saturday.

New Rule: Clean Water Permits Voluntary for Factory Farms
NBC Chicago, IL

The rule affects concentrated animal feeding operations, CAFOs, which annually produce some 500 million tons of animal waste from cattle, pigs and poultry. CAFOs store waste in massive open-air lagoons or dispose of it on land. Spills and runoff of the waste, laden with the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorous, can contaminate drinking water supplies, kill fish and spread disease. The regulation affects compliance with the Clean Water Act’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, NPDES, permitting requirements. It calls on CAFOs that discharge or plan to discharge wastes into waterways to apply for an NPDES permit and to complete a nutrient management plan as part of their application. Those who do not believe they need a permit will not need to apply for one. The public will be allowed to review permit applications and nutrient management plans, according to Ben Grumbles, assistant.

Thane’s water woes set to end by March
Indian Express, India
The project has been completed a year ahead of the official deadline. Thane city’s water woes have been so severe that a few months ago, the corporation had appealed to the neighboring Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation no provide about 40 mld of water to enhance the supply to the city’s 17-lakh strong population. Some areas received civic water supply only once in 36 hours. “All the work on the scheme is complete. We have already started lifting water partly.
