How groundwater extraction and reuse could solve São Paulo’s water …
Business News Americas, Chile
Water reuse and the creation of own-water resources, by digging wells to extract groundwater, are increasingly common. Many developed countries use groundwater wells, which are a renewable source and whose extraction does not interfere with the environment. To learn more about the use of alternative resources and the status quo of water supply in the São Paulo metropolitan area, BNamericas spoke with Sérgio Pontremolez, vice-president of General Water, the first non-governmental water supply company in Brazil. BNamericas: Do you think Brazilian companies are concerned about water resources?Pontremolez: It is common sense to know that water is the most precious element in the world. But how to maintain it and how best to use it are constant topics of discussion. Brazilian companies are becoming increasingly concerned about sustaining natural resources, so they have been using cleaner production techniques and recyclable packaging, for example. BNamericas: What is the current situation of water supply in the São Paulo metropolitan region?Pontremolez: In spite of the fact that Brazil is a country rich in water resources, the reality in the metropolitan region of São Paulo is different.
Killer bug scare has pensioners cut off from water supply for four …
Glasgow Sunday Mail, UK
Leaving hundreds of elderly and frail people with no running water for this long is inhumane. ” Glasgow Housing Association claim the delay is due to difficulties finding the source of the contamination. Officers think the bacteria grew in stagnant water sitting in the swimmingpool-sized tank that supplies the building. A spokesman said: “We understand the concerns of elderly residents but this is a serious issue and it is vital to get it right. ” Scottish Water said: “As the problem is with the tank and not the pipes, it is the responsibility of the private tenants. ” SUNDAY EMAIL s. dinneen@sundaymail.
Water supply fragile
Lithgow Mercury, Australia
67 per cent storage of just a week earlier. Despite the increase the major storage for the region remains on a knife edge, continuing precariously close to the 15 per cent cut off point that will trigger an upgrading of water restrictions. The Lithgow Council area from Marrangaroo through to Glen Davis draws water from the Fish River (Oberon Dam) supply administered by State Water. Lithgow city itself draws water from the Clarence transfer system on Farmers Creek. While Lithgow is largely isolated from water shortages Lithgow Council has previously decreed that should centres like Wallerawang and Portland be forced onto higher level restrictions because of the Oberon Dam situation Lithgow city residents can expect to share in the pain with a âone in, all inâ policy. The Weather Bureau has during the week been predicting more extensive rain across the catchment for both today and tomorrow. And, as a State Water spokesman said yesterday, âevery little bit helpsâ.

CPTFEP convenor Ruben Gonzales said that MRWD, local officials and residents would care for the newly planted seedlings. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources provided the group with seedlings.
Improving Dhaka’s water supply
The New Nation, Bangladesh
Besides, further pumping out of water from the already much lowered aquifer would worsen land subsidence conditions in the city and make it more vulnerable to earthquakes. Therefore, the more viable and safe option to increase water supply in the city would be large scale use of surface water. The first phase of the Sayeedabad water treatment plant using the water of the Sitalakhya river was operationalised about three years ago adding to the total supply of water. But no other project has been taken up since that time to further increase the supply. The second phase of implementation of the Sayeedabad project has been awaiting the conclusion of successful negotiations. Two other major projects for drawing waters from the Padma to supply Dhaka city are also awaiting negotiations with donors. However, while pursuing the options some points are also to be considered.
NOW, DRINKING WATER FROM RIVER ORIGINS
Star of Mysore, India
14 (SSC)- “It has been proposed to supply drinking water to all cities and towns right from where the rivers originate,” announced Vartur Prakash, President of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board. Speaking to the press persons on Thursday, he said that among 218 cities and towns, 175 of them have already been provided with water supply. For the remaining cities, provisions are being made on a priority basis. The Board realising that it is difficult to supply drinking water through borewells, has decided to supply water from the river origins. I have no greed for power”If I had made up my mind, I could have become a Minister. But I don’t have any greed for power,” announced Vartur Prakash and added, “If I ever had such intention then immediately after winning the elections I would have gone and stood before Yeddyurappa.
