Water supply runs dry in parts of Bhisho
Dispatch Online, South Africa
Bhisho Hospital started feeling the water crisis yesterday morning, and the provincial Health Department called on Buffalo City Municipality to transport water to the site. Asked how the hospital’s toilets had coped, Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said: “You may have a picture what happens when there is no water, but the situation is not that bad. ” The crisis started at the weekend, when Buffalo City interrupted the water supply to do repairs on the main water pipe near the House of Traditional Leaders’ building, which is currently under construction. “There was a water pipe that burst during routine maintenance on Saturday and Sunday ,” municipal spokesperson Thabo Matiwane said, adding that there were few water tanks and the priority was the hospital. Although water was to have been restored to the suburbs at 6pm on Saturday, it was not to be for Bhisho Park and other areas. By last night, despite promises from the municipality to have the water restored, there was still no supply to the affected areas.

And if this year is as dry as last year, there will be a surfeit of willing sellers. Just get out and spend it. At least increasing Adelaide’s water supply using desalination is an attempt to make the city independent of the Murray. It is a little-known fact that water from the Murray supplies most of South Australia’s towns. It is piped as far north as Woomera – and Adelaide lies outside the Murray basin. It is time for Kevin Rudd to stop acting like a Queenslander, delaying the inevitable. Federal Water Minister Penny Wong was right: there is not enough water in the system to rescue the lower lakes.

There has been a mandatory water rationing in place for over a week, but city officials feel that this could be eased as the situation continues to be monitored. We hope to possibly lift some of the water rationing restrictions in the near future, Junior Welch, Purcell Operations Coordinator said. Nonessential watering outside, such as lawns and filling pools, is prohibited.

Water supply ‘going good’ with ten year plan
Macau Daily Times, Macau
The current water demand has only reached 270,000 cubic metres, which is still “far” from the maximum capacity. However, and already preparing for the possible demands in the future, Macao Water is already beginning phase three of the main storage reservoir treatment plan (MRS III), which will further increase the capacity to 390,000 cubic metres, Oscar Chu, the company's CEO told reporters yesterday. Speaking on the sidelines of the Customer Liaison Group Meeting on the company's projected development strategies, Chu said that overall customers were satisfied with the company's work throughout the years. Of the 500 surveys collected this year, 70 percent of the respondents said they would still choose Macao Water when the company's concession ends in 2010. Chu said that he was confident that, should the government allowed for there to be two water supply companies, most of the customers would “stick” with Macao Water. The only complaint customers seem to have, according to Chu, is on the company's emergency repair services which have been extended to property boundaries.

The white farmhouse at the front of the property that was formerly the home of the previous owners, Eugene and Phyllis Lynch, will be razed. A post-and-beam house behind it is in better shape but was illegally built too close to Bull Brook and will be sold or torn down. The property cost $975,000, of which about $495,000 came from a state Department of Environmental Protection Drinking Water Supply Protection Grant. The remainder was covered by the Town’s Open Space Bond Authorization and the Open Space, Recreation and Water Supply Protection Fund. This is the 12th property either purchased or permanently conserved since the $10 million Open Space Bond was approved by voters in 2000. 5 million has been spent, with another $3 million coming from various other sources to fund the purchases.
