Water, water everywhere
NEWS.com.au – Mar 7, 2008
Following 11 years of drought and record low inflows into our catchments, water storages across Victoria are extremely low. Scientists and other experts are predicting a future with less rainfall due to the impact of climate change, which will result in less water in our storages. To secure water supplies across the state, the Brumby Government is implementing a $4. 9 billion water plan with a range of major infrastructure projects. The desalination plant near Wonthaggi will provide 150 billion litres of water, or more than a third of Melbourne’s annual needs. This water is not dependent on rainfall but will create new drinking water. Additional water will be provided to Melbourne, Geelong, and towns in Western Port and South Gippsland.

Water, Water, Everywhere. What Will They Think of Next?

This water will join water that had already been diverted last month. While it’s a wonderful luxury to be able to turn on the tap to delicious drinking water, this new endeavor has done more to highlight China’s water shortage than to showcase Beijing’s tremendous resources. One of the chief causes of the water shortages, increased development, isn’t likely to slow down any time soon, so Chinese scientists will need to find innovative ways to maximize their water resources. Determining how China can increase its water supply, while simultaneously reducing air pollution, and increasing development, is no easy task. On the other hand, if Chinese leaders can figure out a way to use cloud seeding to produce rain before the Opening Ceremonies, or find a way to end foul-smelling cabs, anything’s possible. << LATEST ENTRIES >>.

Reduce water pressure only if it’s too high
News & Observer – Mar 7, 2008
That follows the 2 inches that fell in parts of the Triangle late Tuesday, bringing life to area streams and raising reservoirs depleted by months of drought. Durham’s Lake Michie overflowed for the first time since May 18, and Falls Lake rose more than 2 feet. The rain had added more than a month to Raleigh’s water supply in Falls Lake as of Thursday, city officials said. The city had 164 days of water left, assuming consumption remains constant and no additional rain occurs. After today, that number should rise again. Q: One [conservation method] that comes to mind is to decrease the water pressure. Most homes have an adjustable water pressure regulator and typically have 80-plus pounds of pressure when 40 pounds will work just fine.
