Deep snowpack hints at banner water year
Rocky Mountain News – Feb 21, 2008
Last year at this time, snowpacks registered 90 percent of average. “We can’t say we’re out of the drought yet,” said Alfredo Rodriguez, a water resources engineer for the city of Aurora, “but we’re excited. Colorado derives roughly 80 percent of its annual water supplies from mountain snows that melt each spring and are captured in reservoirs. If the spring runoff remains as healthy as current snowpacks indicate, most water utilities anticipate having plenty of water on hand this summer. “We expect to fill and spill virtually everywhere,” said Kevin Lusk, a water resources planner with Colorado Springs Utilities. Though the Front Range has seen just average snows this year, mountain regions have seen spectacular amounts, particularly in the southwestern parts of the state. Mesa Verde National Park, outside Durango, is near historic highs for snowpack, officials said Wednesday at a meeting of the state’s Water Availability Task Force.

Construction on the water plant expansion could begin nextmonth with completion slated for late summer 2009…
, was the apparent low bidder out ofsix. The expansion will be the last at the south Huntsville waterplant because there’s no more room. The southwest watertreatment plant near Triana has a 48 million-gallon capacitywith room to grow. Long range plans call for a new watertreatment plant near Guntersville Dam, but that facility isstill at least seven to 10 years away. Yell said the system lost some of its constant supply whenthe Williams well of Zierdt Road and the Lowe Mill well inthe Lowe neighborhood of west Huntsville were taken out ofservice because of low water tables. © 2008 The Huntsville Times.
