With this, the WWD hasalso decided to streamline water supply in the areas which have been facingwater problems since a few months, executive engineer Shashikant Hastaksaid. Recently, the WWDundertook a three-day repair and renovation work under the Jawaharlal NehruNational Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), due to which there was no water supplyin most of the localities for almost 60hours. During the shutdown, theWWD replaced old pump machinery at Kanhan, sluice valve on the main pipelinebetween Automotive Square and Minimata Nagar square. However, the newly fittedrubber gasket of 900 mm pipeline gave away on Wednesday morning.

The government expected result-oriented performance and that the benefits of various development and welfare measure reached the targeted sections of society. The government’s immediate concern was to ensure drinking water supply to people in villages facing water scarcity. Drinking water supply schemes, including tap-water connections and bore wells go drying during every summer forcing the local administration to arrange water supply through tankers. Now, with just two months left for summer, all measures needed to be taken so that villagers did not face shortage of drinking water. She said: “I don’t want to see pipelines and closed taps, I want to see water flowing, indeed. ”It is not enough to lay pipe lines or open bore wells unless they are made functional and water flowed from them, she said and made it clear that she would not be cowed down by political influence or pressure…

0: inline article box end –> Two major water-supply projects have recently been completed with ICRC assistance in Goma and Bukavu, the largest cities in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “The population of these two cities has exploded as a direct result of the fighting in North and South Kivu,” said Max Hadorn, head of the ICRC’s delegation in the country. “The existing infrastructure is totally inadequate and lack of water has been a serious problem for the inhabitants. ” The Bukavu project, which is being managed by the national water board, Rigideso, was completed in less than two months. By restoring to working order a section of the water-distribution system that serves 300,000 people, it will bring relief to thousands of household that have been without running water for three years in an area hard hit by a series of cholera epidemics, the most recent in late 2006.

KWA bid to meet city’s water demand

With an eye on supporting the future population of the city and also the growth of the city into the adjoining municipalities and panchayats, the project of augmenting the water supply to 680 million litres per day will be taken up in the second phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project. Mapping the contours and topography of 30 wards in the city area was completed by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) while the rest of the work has been taken up by WAPCOS, a Delhi-based consulting firm, which has also completed 70 per cent of the survey. The refurbished water supply system is expected to keep in tune with the growing population of the city with the execution of the Smart City and Vallarpadam projects. The existing capacity of 225 mld of water into the city and nearby areas will be augmented in the first phase of the project with the addition of over 150 mld that has already been sanctioned…
