The total amount of freshwater resources is 2 800 billion [m. 3]-7% of the world total andfourth among all countries. The per-capita amount is however only 2 200[m…
In the long run, as the cost of sewage treatment is equal to thecost of water supply, spending for sewage treatment should be roughlyequal to the cost of water supply. In addition, a rate 2-3 times higherwill be imposed on the treatment of industrial sewage according to theextent of pollution. Although the water price is closely related to people’s life, the state takes a very cautious attitude towards the water pricereadjustment. The ideology about the water price readjustment since theTenth Five-year Plan period (2001-2005) is as follows: Differentialprices are implemented to different water sources and differentconsumption types. "We find it strange for a company that boasts of good performance on a global scale for utilities to be indebted to this magnitude and not be able to pay," said John Odit, chairman of the Parliamentary committee in charge of State Enterprises. Some of the projects lined up include extending and improving water supply to areas such as Malaba township and the districts of Mbale, Kabale and Arua, buying better pumping equipment and computerising all processes in water supply. "It is our only water utility firm and has a good track record, so we must make the best of it," said Jessica Eriyo, State Minister for the Environment. A draft income statement after the cleanup shows an expansion of the firm's asset base from Ush65. 6 million) by June 2006 to Ush238 billion ($140 million) this year, with the company reporting profits after all expenses including finance costs.
