In Drought, Upscale Homeowners Dig for Water
NPR – Nov 14, 2007
“This grass is all brown, halfway dead,” Pericchi said as he stood in the front yard of his two-month-old house. Several newly planted holly bushes and other shrubs have already wilted and turned brown. Watering restrictions are common across the Southeast as officials struggle to conserve the area’s dwindling water supply. Many homeowners have become accustomed to living with brown grass and thirsty shrubbery. But Pericchi — who works in the landscaping business — decided to take steps to keep his own lawn green. Last week, he hired a crew to drill a private well in his front yard. It cost more than $3,000, but to Pericchi, it’s a sound investment that will allow him to keep watering his grass and gardens.

Capital faces a severe water crisis
Hindu – Nov 14, 2007
” The Delhi Jal Board, which is being forced to release about 800 cusecs of water downstream of Wazirabad, wants Haryana to take “immediate steps to plug the leaks”. While the Delhi Jal Board itself has requested the Haryana Irrigation Department to release more water so that the contaminated bit can be flushed out, the Central Pollution Control Board in a “strongly worded letter” has directed the Haryana State Pollution Control Board to take action against the erring industries. While the two water treatment plants — Chandrwal with a capacity of 95 million gallons a day and Wazirabad with 120 MGD — remain out of use, several parts of the Capital including areas under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Central Delhi, Delhi Cantonment, Sabzi Mandi, North Delhi and North West Delhi are likely to face an acute water shortage beginning Wednesday. In the NDMC areas, the Jal Board will not be in a position to supply water to Jhandewalan, Talkatora and Wazirabad on Wednesday morning. Water supply will also be affected in Gole Market and adjoining areas, DIZ (Delhi Imperial Zone) area, Lady Hardinge Medical College, Bengali Market, Tilak Marg, areas around Rajpath, Meena Bagh, Sarojini Nagar, Laxmi Bai Nagar, Yashwant Place and Chankyapuri…

Ammonia hits water treatment
Times of India – Nov 14, 2007
In such a situation, we have nooption but to stop thetreatment. Technically, officials say, there should be no ammonia content in water at all and if itspresence is found, it can be treated only up to a limit but 4 pps is beyondtreatable. Areas expected tosuffer due to water shortage include VVIP areas in the New Delhi MunicipalCouncil (NDMC) which largely get their supply from these WTPs. Civil Lines,Daryaganj, Chandni Chowk, South Extension, Jungpura, Greater Kailash, Saket,Defence Colony, Kingsway Camp, Jehangirpuri, Cantonment area, Patel Nagar, KarolBagh, among others will also not receive the morning and evening supply, reported officials. The boardhas written to the Haryana Pollution Board chairman regarding this and has askedthem to check the ammonia content in the water. “The increase in the ammonialevel would possibly be because of chemical and municipal waste. In order toflush out the dangerous content of ammonia we have asked Haryana to release muchmore water than they usually supply,” said Mathur.
