Aurora water deal taps into worries
Denver Post – Sep 2, 2007
Bureau of Reclamation on a 40-year contract to store and purchase up to 10,000 acre-feet of water – about 5 percent of the city’s water usage – from the Pueblo Reservoir each year. Final wording is being hashed out on the agreement, which has been on a year-to-year basis. New purification facilities “This gives us long-term security to the water supply,” Aurora Mayor Ed Tauer said. “We need to make sure the next time we have a drought that we can perform for our citizens. This will help us do that. ” The deal comes just weeks after the city broke ground on its $800 million Prairie Waters project, a water purification project that will provide up to 3. 3 billion gallons of water to the city annually starting in 2010…
However, Singletary said, it comes down to one basic issue. “We are losing our water,” he said. The agreement between the city and the government calls for Aurora to purchase the water for $43 per acre-foot when the city needs it if it is available, said Mark Pifher, deputy director of water resources for Aurora Water. Farmers in the area have senior water rights and could take the water in drought conditions. The cost will increase annually by 1. With the city of 300,000 residents expected to grow, officials believe it is important to secure as much water as it can.
Add water . . .
San Diego Union Tribune – Sep 2, 2007
It is especially unfortunate, then, that Democratic leaders in the Legislature are spurning Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's efforts to bolster California's water infrastructure. San Diego, which is at the bottom of the state's pipeline, stands to suffer the most if water supplies are interrupted by drought, earthquake or other factors. As matters stand already, San Diego farmers have been told to expect a 30 percent reduction in their state water allotment, starting next January. If dry conditions continue, as expected, the region could face a 35 percent reduction in its total water supply. This would mean more than brown lawns. Significant job losses could be expected, not only in agriculture but also in a host of other industries that rely heavily on imported water.
Water … a failure by successive governments

The Bradfield Scheme was included in the $640 million 5-Year Bicentennial Water Resources supplementary program specifically to further investigate the advantages of massive amounts of additional fresh water supplies for Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, via Queensland’s channel country, which feeds into the Murray-Darling delta. The incoming Queensland Labor Goss government in 1990 scrapped the feasibility study of the revised Bradfield Scheme citing the project cost as being prohibitive … so the current tragic water crisis began, and the rest is history. The problem with the recycling concept is that in theory it works. In practice all things have their failures and more so those associated with governments. A current example would be the upgraded Melbourne rail system.
