Bottled Water Is Draining Your Bank Account

But when it comes to wasting money, it’s just as bad a habit. Most people don’t consider drinking bottled water a bad habit because they have come to believe that it is healthier for them than tap water. While this may be true in some countries where the water supply is not clean and safe, it isn’t true for those living in the U. The bottled water you are drinking may come from the same place as the the water you’re already paying for. If the package label indicates it is “purified,” then chances are it originates from a municipal water supply.

“The primary policy guiding South Africa’s economic development, AsgiSA, makes no mention of this key restraint to growth, or the needto carefully manage our rainfall catchments and improve the water-use efficiency of industry and agriculture,” he said. Further damage to water resources “could trigger massive social, economic and environmental damage and scupper South Africa’s quest for six percent economic growth”. Also at the launch, former water affairs deputy director-general Barbara Schreiner, who left the department in March this year to become a consultant, listed the main threats to water resources in South Africa. Chief among these was over-abstraction, particularly the theft of water by farmers, which she described as “a major problem”, but declined to put a figure on its extent. Other threats included the discharge of effluent by industry, sewage spills and chemical run-off from agriculture; the physical destruction of habitat such as wetlands; and the impact of invasive alien vegetation, which was sucking up about seven percent of the country’s water supply. Schreiner said Botswana and Namibia – both very dry countries – had more water per capita than did South Africa, whose population had reached 48,9 million in April this year.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials want residents to dig wells at the time of constructing multi-storeyed buildings. For buildings which are more than five storeys high, rainwater harvesting will be made a must. Prof Asis Mazumdar of the school of water resources and engineering at Jadavpur University asserts that steps to harvest rainwater on a large scale should be taken immediately to prevent drinking water scarcity. According to the estimates of KMCs water supply department, 73 million gallon water could be drawn daily from wells of nearly 1,110,00 houses in the citys fringe areas. A well measuring 5-ft in diameter could be dug easily at every site of a new construction, they feel. The water in the well could be used for washing cars, watering gardens and in toilets. A 90-ft deep well doesnt draw water from the freshwater aquifer and escapes arsenic contamination, Mr Bibhas Maity, the director-general of the KMCs water supply department said.
