Overnight showers in battered Tewkesbury raised fears of further misery but clearer weather pushed them east before dawn and the town basked in warm sunshine most of yesterday, along with much of the rest of the country. A huge emergency operation at the crippled Mythe water treatment plant near Tewkesbury has now restored supplies to 10,000 local homes, and 54,000 in Gloucester should be reconnected by tonight, with Cheltenham following tomorrow. The scale of the work was highlighted by Severn Thames Water, which is having to fill 54 miles of large mains and 1,200 miles of smaller pipes to avoid airlocks before taps can be turned on. Andy Smith, the company’s director of water services, said: “Significant progress was made on Saturday when an intensive testing and commissioning process made sure all damaged and flooded equipment was operational and fully repaired. The controlled process of refilling more than 1,000 miles of empty water pipes and reconnecting 130,000 homes is now in its early stages. “However, this does not mean that customers will have water at their taps immediately.

Severn Trent Water said it was ready to start pumping water toGloucester, one of the worst affected counties. It follows the restoration of the Mythe water treatment works inthe market town of Tewkesbury, which was submerged by flooding. But it could take several days for supplies to filter through to60,000 homes affected in Gloucester. Even once supply is restored, homeowners are warned that thewater is not safe to drink, even if boiled. It can be used forshowering, bathing, flushing toilets and washing clothes. Andy Smith, Severn Trent’s director of water services, said:”This a controlled process to refill more than a thousand miles ofempty water pipes and we must emphasise that it may take severaldays for supplies to filter through to 60,000 homes inGloucester.

The project will include two pipelines, one 14,000 feet long and 6 inches in diameter and the other 22,600 feet long and 4 inches in diameter, and repairs to two pumping stations. The project is scheduled to complete in less than six months. Addressing the foundation-laying ceremony of the project, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal said that the CDGK was working to resolve sewerage and water supply problems permanently so that the people do not have to complain to future nazims about the system. Had any attention been paid to this in the past, we would have resolved other big problems faced by the city. It is unfortunate that we are still laying water and sewerage lines in different areas of the city. He said that the water supply system in Esa Nagri was completely damaged due to old and cracked lines while some of the areas had never been provided with any water supply or sewerage system even after 40 years of their existence. He said that the city government was spending Rs 17 billion on improvement of the water and sewerage system to make Karachi as problem-free a city as possible.
