Water supplies returning to homes

But Severn Trent Water – which plans to phase in supplies over a week – warned that the water would not initially be fit for drinking, even if boiled. County police chief Tim Brain asked people to stay patient, adding: “There is light at the end of the tunnel. Fears of more flooding have faded and drier weather is forecast for the week. “The restoration of supply is beginning very slowly and cautiously, and appropriately so, because we don’t want any mishaps at this stage,” said Chief Constable Brain.
Flood areas brace for more heavy rain

Health experts have also warned that flood water may contain dangerous bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella. In Gloucestershire, where fresh water supplies have been cut after contamination from flooding, there was anger among residents after emergency bowsers were vandalised, leaving families without drinking water. Yobs were accused of urinating and tipping bleach into supplies, deliberately running them dry and even having water fights. Residents also complained that not enough water was being brought in. Some reported having to visit as many as 50 bowsers before they could find one with water in it. Parmjit Dhanda, the Gloucester MP, vowed to put pressure on Severn Trent to increase supplies to the 1,050 bowsers in the region…
I do think the focus on bottled water is very important. Gloucestershire Police warned that anyone caught fighting over water supplies or damaging bowsers could expect to be sent to prison. Fighting over water supplies will now be treated in the same way as “road rage” assaults. In these cases, short custodial sentences have been approved by the appeal courts. Vandalism of emergency supplies has infuriated locals struggling to find enough water. The situation has become so tense that volunteers and community support officers have been standing guard over bowsers. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visited the region yesterday.

Significant progress had been made in repairing the flood-damaged works over the weekend, Severn Trent Water said. Some 130,000 homes in Gloucestershire lost running water supplies after the floods hit more than a week ago. But Severn Trent stressed the tap water would not yet be fit for drinking, even if boiled. The Tewkesbury area would begin to get water over the next 24 hours, said a spokesman for Severn Trent. The operation to provide emergency drinking water from bowsers and bottled water is to go on in the meantime. Severn Trent said it would release details of areas that were due for reconnection on a daily basis.
