From Tewkesbury to Oxford, the week that water ruined the lives of…
The Independent – Independent – Jul 28, 2007
And then on Thursday a father and son, overcome by fumes as they battled to pump out their beloved rugby club. In Cheltenham, home to 110,000 people, normal life was grinding to a halt by Monday. With the main water treatment plant knocked out, local people were told they will have no fresh water supplies for the next two weeks. Blue bowsers were springing up on street corners and long queues formed as people filled up any vessel at their disposal. (The clever ones said they had managed to fill their baths before the pipes ran dry. ) The more stupid members of the community were vandalising the bowsers, turning on the taps and allowing the precious water to gush away uselessly. By night, the centres of Cheltenham and neighbouring Gloucester and Stroud were ghost towns.

Mine spill cuts water supply in China
USA Today – Jul 28, 2007
It reported that more than 39,000 cubic yards of lead-zinc residue were washed into the river after a drain collapsed at the private Zhongtai Mining Corp. China’s waterways are dangerously polluted after decades of rapid economic growth and lax enforcement of pollution controls. In 2005, water supplies in Lengshuijiang were cut for part of a day when a fertilizer maker accidentally spilled 130 cubic yards of ammonia nitrate into the river. A chemical plant accident that year spewed tons of toxic nitrobenzene and other chemicals into north China’s Songhua river, forcing authorities to temporarily cut off water to millions of people. In April, 150,000 villagers in southern China lost water access after authorities found high levels of lead and other heavy metals in the Honghe river in Guangxi province. The delta is the crossroads of California’s water, the meeting place of its two longest rivers and a significant source of water for 23 million Californians and 3 million acres of agriculture. Ways to preserve its benefits were at the center of Friday’s Delta Vision Workshop sponsored by the Water Education Foundation and.
