Water resources are unevenly distributed throughout Southern Africa, a region filled with deserts, as well as some of the world’s largest lakes and rivers. Measured by volume, the Congo River, rising in the East African highlands and flowing through the rainforests of Central Africa, is second only to the Amazon. Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa’s Great Lakes, contains the second largest volume of freshwater in the world, and Lake Victoria has the second largest surface area of any freshwater lake. Five river basins — the Zambezi, Congo, Orange, Limpopo and Okavango — carry more than enough water to ensure that all.

Mississippi’s Department of Environmental Quality, which is managing the effort, has approved a grant of almost $2. 5 million for planning and engineering costs for the Picayune and Poplarville projects. Engineers will now draw up detailed blueprints for water-supply systems.

Oxford Residents Evacuated as Flood Water Rises in UK

Floodwater is receding along the River Severn, with water levels falling by more than 6ins in Tewkesbury. Severn Trent says mains water supplies in Gloucestershire could be off for two weeks. Some 500 browsers providing three million litres of drinking water a day set up in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury. Free bottles of water are being given out.
