Irregular water supply dominates council meeting

Councillors said that residents in several parts of the town were not getting adequate supply of water. Ward 17 councillor Anwar Basha urged the municipal administration to ensure uniform supply of water to all the parts of the town. Residents in the ward were supplied water only for a short period, he complained. He also appealed to the municipality to provide water free of cost to the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in his ward.

Various scientists and experts from different scientific institutions were present on the occasion. Apart from governmental departments monitoring water supply in different cities, quality assurance cells should be constituted in various regions in order to monitor the supply of water, the experts said.

Not just Karur farmers but all those in the region between Mettur in Salem district and Grand Anicut in Thanjavur district would benefit from the release. Since good tidings of monsoon have appeared on the horizon, there need not be too many worries regarding storage position, others said. Farmers reiterated their grouse that the whole region is classified as a single crop zone and water supply apportioned accordingly. “From time immemorial, annual crops such as banana, sugarcane and betel vine have been cultivated but the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal had apportioned water for a single season crop. That is gross injustice and we would like the administration to set the record straight,” Mr. Gopaladesikan said.
