Bracks’ water wager
The Age – Jun 24, 2007
The water master plan announced by Bracks was politicallyshrewd. It means that there’ll be both a long-term supply of water, regardless of how much rain we get, and additional watertransported from the state’s north through a new pipe before thenext election. According to Bracks, the water plan will increase Melbourne’swater supply by 50 per cent within five years and — more goodnews — voters may even be able to give the roses a drinkbefore they vote in 2010, courtesy of an easing of waterrestrictions. But the announcement will stir up a hornet’s nest in countryVictoria. State Nationals’ leader Peter Ryan has already predicteda massive rural backlash over the plan to pump water from the bushto Melbourne. And as with most big political decisions, there arepotential risks, and potential losers, in the water plan. For the average Victorian, the downside is this: tough waterrestrictions are likely to be around for another three years, household water costs will soar and the environment has largelybeen sidelined.

New water reservoir inaugurated
Hindu – Jun 24, 2007
The underground reservoir is important for Basant Gaon as it is an urbanised village situated in an undulating and rocky terrain because of which there is a ground level difference between various pockets that makes equitable water supply a challenging task. However, due to its prime location and the high density of population there has been a major increase in the demand for water. To improve the water supply position, the Delhi Jal Board has constructed an additional underground reservoir with a booster pumping station of 1 lakh gallon capacity and laid a kilometre-long water pipeline for the village at an estimated cost of Rs. The newly constructed reservoir has enhanced the existing storage capacity from 50,000 gallons to 1. With the commissioning of the underground reservoir and booster pumping station, all pockets of Basant Gaon are now covered with filtered water supply.

The peri-urban areas in Accra such as Adenta, Madina and Sabo zongo are currently experiencing these problems. Can Ghana achieve the Millennium Development Goal 7 which seeks to âHalf, by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable assess to safe drinking water and basic sanitationâ? In order to achieve this goal, Ghana needs to come out with pragmatic solutions to the current water supply situation in the peri-urban areas. Lack of funds by the government to provide water facilities for the peri-urban communities is the main reason behind the inadequate peri-urban water supply in Accra.
