An official spokesman said here on Tuesday that the Nigam would also erect new 11 KV level feeders to ensure independent power supply to Government hospitals, Community Health Centres and Primary Health Centres on a priority basis. He said the Nigam had made a comprehensive plan to implement metering on distribution transformers for proper energy audit. A new70-kilometre pipeline will be built to enable the water savings tobe piped to the Sugarloaf Reservoir — with the first waterentering Melbourne’s water supply by 2010. The new Sugarloaf Pipeline is a key part of our plan to expandthe Victorian water grid with 250 kilometres of new pipelinesacross the state — allowing us to move water to where it isneeded most. New pipelines will connect Geelong to Melbourne’swater supplies, and Hamilton to the Grampians. And, combined withexisting projects such as the Goldfields Superpipe and WimmeraMallee Pipeline, the Victorian Water Grid will grow to almost10,000 kilometres. Building this diverse, long-term water infrastructure is vital,and water prices will need to rise to pay for some of the newprojects. Victorians have already made an outstanding effort saving water. Farmers have become more water efficient.

Boil water ‘until further notice’

Tests on water supplies on Saturday confirmed cryptosporidium, which can cause diarrhoea, may have entered the drinking water supply. The affected areas are North Walsham and North Walsham Road, Felmingham. Anglian Water said it was now likely that the restriction notice would be in place until early next week. ‘Easily filtered’Drinking water and water used for food preparation should be boiled first. The normal supply can still be used for washing, bathing and flushing the toilet.
