Serious efforts needed on water conservation: Tan

“The Government through my Ministry is fully aware of this problem and these areas are priority under the Ninth Malaysia Plan. Currently under construction are the new water treatment plants at Telibong in Tamparuli, Segaliud in Sandakan, Milau in Kudat and Kogopon in Papar. ” In the meantime, emergency water supply scheme (EWSS) projects are being initiated to enhance water supply including the water treatment package at Limbahau Papar which has just commenced operation. A few other projects under the Rural Water Supply (BALB) project by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry had also been able to provide clean water to the island population in Pulau Sebatik in Tawau. Pulau Banggi in Kudat is expected to enjoy the same within this year.

Now, a month-long lack of rainfall is plaguing the Little Hocking Water Association. A week ago, it asked its customers to limit their use of public water. In part, it’s an effort to avoid having to put into service a well with major C-8 contamination. “It’s been as high as 18. 6 parts per billion, so it’s significantly higher than the other ones,” says water manager Robert Griffin…
“We’re kind of back to normal for the next few days, but then we’ll see what happens when the weather turns better,” Griffin says. “It may be a long summer. While it is not affected by C-8, officials in Mineral Wells tell us their water conservation order is continuing as long as there’s no significant moisture to re-plenish the water supply.

Chairing a meeting regarding the problems of Surjani Town, the minister observed that there was an acute shortage of potable water in many areas. He directed KWSB chief engineer to ensure provision of water by alternative means to residents who were unable to get water due to the repair of lines, load-shedding or other reasons. He called for the preparation of PC-I for a separate water line for Surjani from the Hub Reservoir. He hoped that after the handing over of the hydrants by the Rangers to the towns on June 15, the water supply situation would improve…
