Pipe burst hits water supply

“The pipeline is 25 yearsold and there was a small leak in one pocket. Severe wear and tear due totraffic on either side of the pipeline and the presence of a railway tracknearby led to the burst,” said director, technical, Hyderabad Metro Water Supplyand Sewerage Board, M Satyanarayana. “Officials reached the spotimmediately and most of the loss was contained. Repair works will be completedby Tuesday night,” he added.

36-crore project to be completed in a year’s time Chennai : The Central sanctioning and monitoring committee for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has cleared a water supply scheme for Porur, near Chennai, at a total cost of nearly Rs. The project will get financial assistance from the Central and State governments, besides contribution from the Town Panchayat. The project will be completed in one year and the supply will be 135 litres per capita per day.

Funds like theseinvest in listed and unlisted companies operating in water-related sectors likewater supply, treatment of waste water, sewage treatment and solid, liquid andchemical waste, water technology, environmental services, water bottling,mineral water, water conditioning and desalination companies, water suppliers,transport and dispatching companies, companies providing equipment, consultingand engineering services and buying up ground water rights. BesidesWessex, funds that are eyeing the Indian water industry are Water InfrastructureFund launched by Canada-based Criterion Investments and Water Exchange-TradedFund (ETF) launched by First Trust based on International Securities Exchange(ISE). Water Index Fund that tracks an index of 36 companies working in thepotable and wastewater industries. Globally, large funds like Pictet AssetManagement, Seidler, Berlant, Terrapin Asset Management, Technology Partners andSchroders Investment Management also have specialised funds that invest in watersector across the world. Gary Katz, ISEâs chief operatingofficer says that with rapid economic growth, both India and China have alsoexperienced high rates of consumption for natural resources such as oil, gas,and water.
