Water supply situation improves
Hindu – May 12, 2007
Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey, who is also the Administrator of the Gulbarga City Corporation, which maintains the internal distribution of the drinking water in the city, told The Hindu here on Friday that with the pumping of 12 million gallons a day (MGD) of water from the Saradgi Barrage across the Bhima through a new pipeline laid at a cost of Rs. 45 crore drinking water supply to the city had considerably improved. He said at least 25 of the 32 localities in the city were getting water either on alternate days or once in three days. Daily supply to the city was being reviewed and steps taken to plug leakage in the internal distribution were being taken to ensure that all houses with water connection were provided drinking water.

HYDERABAD: Water-starved people vent anger by blocking trains
Pakistan Dawn – May 12, 2007
Millatabad and Islamabad localities are located within the city taluka while Gujrati para is situated in Latifabad taluka. The areas are supplied water from Hala Naka water works where the present district government had ordered desilting of water settlement ponds but, according to Managing Director of WASA, Mishraz Siddiqu, the desilting had not yet been completed and ponds are not handed over to him. He also attributed the problem to inter-connections of new water supply lines that has recently been laid through Gul Shah area to Tando Yousuf. The inter-connections of pipeline which involves checking of water supply in the line off and on leads to problems of non-supply of water”, said the MD who was attending a meeting with District Nazim regarding water supply issue on Friday night. The residents of Malkani lane, Tilak in-incline also staged a protest demonstration against non-supply of drinking water and electricity. They burnt tyres on the main roads. The Market police rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters to disperse as they would ensure water supply.

Water storage a big priority
Stockton Record – May 12, 2007
We either don’t have enough water to meet our state’s growing needs or we’re inundated with floodwaters. The single most important action we can take to protect the public from the devastating impacts of flooding and meet the water-supply needs of our state’s growing population is to invest in building new surface water storage facilities. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s plan to invest $4. 5 billion to develop additional surface water storage is a big step in the right direction and complements actions we’ve taken in Congress to identify possible reservoir locations. Several promising sites have been identified in the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada as the most effective way to capture additional water from winter storms and from spring snow- melt runoff.
