China drought threatens water supply for millions

Large areas of southern and southwestern China from the island province of Hainan to normally wet and subtropical Yunnan province have seen hardly any rain this spring, Xinhua said, citing the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters. Water shortages had also affected 13 million hectares of farmland, it added. Inner Mongolia, covered by desert in large parts, and the frigid northeastern province of Heilongjiang were seeing similar water shortages and were in increased danger of being struck by dust storms, the report said.

Ananthan Coimbatore: With mercury levels soaring this summer, the fire and rescue services department is in the process of identifying water hydrants and other water resources in and around the city. The focus is on water hydrants, the valves introduced by the British in the main pipelines for the fire tenders to tap the water resources in the event of a fire accident. These hydrants “essential in nature and aesthetic in appearance” are fast becoming history. Under the British regime, the municipalities had these hydrants in every ward but many of them had become defunct and useless. While the state doesn’t have toll roads, it does have toll bridges.
