Although the authorities can measure the amount of water that is lost in the system, by measuring what goes in and what is used, they don’t know where the missing water is going. This wastage will have serious consequences for the region, where climate change predictions are for a hotter, drier Western Cape over the next 25 years. And 95 percent of the rivers that feed into the water management regions of the Berg, Breede and Gouritz River catchments – the main water supplies for the province – are in an ecologically critical condition. Only the mountainous regions received more rain than this. The new Berg River Dam, which would come into operation next year, would provide more water for Cape Town, but demand would outstrip this new water supply by 2015. The catchment region of the Olifants and Doorn Rivers was already “over allocated”, with people using more water than could be supplied.

– If our drinking water supply is contaminated, accidentally or intentionally, a spill response team goes to work, getting the situation under control as quickly as possible. Now new computer software is helping make the response even quicker — all across the country. “The first thing we want to do is find out how big of a threat it is,” Doug Stolz, of Olympia, Washington’s, Hazardous Materials Spill Response Team, tells DBIS. “We want to assess the threat, determine what the material is, and what its characteristics are. Testing the water helps answer those questions.
