PRIs to control water supply schemes

Talking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, Rajwant Sidhu, Principal Secretary (Irrigation and Public Health), said only those schemes that were in perfect running condition and only gravity-run projects that did not require pumping would be handed over in the first phase. Sandhu said the Department, in consultation with the PRIs, would work out the manpower requirements for the operation and maintenance of water supply schemes and wages to be paid. Collector pulls up irrigation staff

The area to be polled includes 19 shires from the Tweed River in the south to Cooloola Shire in the north and Toowoomba in the west. Mr Beattie said he had tasted recycled water during a recent visit to Singapore. "I have no qualms about drinking recycled water and I believe through education and public awareness our community are becoming much more accepting," Mr Beattie said. Deputy Premier Anna Bligh will today introduce a bill to allow the plebiscite to be held. The government doesn’t yet have the power to allow a vote to be held in one particular section of the state. Mr Beattie said the vote would give people in the council areas that drew from the water supplies of the Wivenhoe Dam system a say on recycled water. The government is building a recycled-water pipeline, which will primarily take recycled water to industrial and agricultural users, but could pump it into the drinking supply.
