$1.4-b contract awarded for KMA water supply system
Jamaica Observer – Nov 17, 2006
4 billion has been awarded to French public works firm Sogea Satom for the rehabilitation of the Kingston Metropolitan Area (KMA) water supply system. The project is being undertaken by the National Water Commission (NWC), supported by the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), and is aimed at improving water supply to the greater Spanish Town area and South East St Catherine, by way of the KMA. “This is going to have major impact on the reliability of the water supply system in that area,” Minister of Information and Development Donald Buchanan told Monday’s post-cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House. Buchanan said that, over the years, much of the water from that area has been siphoned off into the Corporate Area, and many areas in South St Catherine were left suffering from serious water deficits. “Many years ago, the government, working alongside the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, entered into negotiations about this project and it has been a long time in coming. I recall as minister with responsibility for water and housing, in a different light, announcing it several times. This now is the fruition of that work and it is really going to make a very serious difference,” the minister added.
Water supply ponds converted into fish farms
Pakistan Dawn – Nov 17, 2006
com ———- –>Water supply ponds converted into fish farmsBy M. KalhoroLARKANA, Nov 16: Some influential people have allegedly converted three water storage ponds of a rural water supply scheme into fish ponds in Yarodero village. The Village Development Association of Yarodero in a letter to the local government secretary on April 6 had pointed out the encroachment and despite the intervention of the DCO Qambar-Shahdadkot, the authorities had failed to get the encroachment vacated. Sources told Dawn on Thursday that 20 years ago the scheme was put in operation but later due to non-functioning it was handed over to the VDA that successfully operated it. The secretary of the VDA said that motors, pumps, pipes and doors were stolen and even the bricks were taken away. The superintendent engineer of the public health engineering of the Larkana circle, Ram Chand Sanjira, had asked its executive engineer in Qambar to undertake a survey of the area.
Spillover threatens water supplies in Chad
Independent Online – Nov 17, 2006
Oxfam International warned it may have to cut daily rations for the Sudanese refugees living in camps in southeastern Chad to help hundreds of displaced Chadians arriving daily to safe areas near the camps. The humanitarian group said it may not be able to adhere to international standards of 15 litres per person per day. Roland Van Hauwermeiren, head of Oxfam’s operations in eastern Chad, said in a statement that Oxfam’s pumping station in Goz Beida, where many displaced are arriving, is already working at full capacity for the refugee camp.
