"Our biggest medical centers have been built in our larger cities. "Thirteen of the 20 largest cities on earth are located at sea level on coasts, Parker points out. "As sea level rises, there go our medical institutions, water treatment plants, emergency response units such as fire departments and ambulances. The bulk of the services designed to keep us healthy are almost all located in our larger cities, which are also located frequently at sea level. "Then there is the matter of water. "Then there is the matter of water. Clean water is one of the most basic and critical health needs. But climate change is threatening water supply quantities in many areas as well as water quality. "Even without climate change, water is already in short supply," said Parker. "But under changed climate conditions, precipitation patterns are expected to change. " That means droughts and famines could become more prominent. Worsening water quality is expected to go hand-in-hand with the continuing deterioration of the natural ecosystems all around us.

Nuclear power will ‘worsen drought’

"That is the equivalent of at least an additional 5,000 Olympic-size swimming pools a year," Mr Beattie said. "It is water that we simply cannot afford when drought and climate change are drying up water supplies. "He said nuclear power stations needed a guaranteed water supply and a strong connection to an electricity grid, implying a nuclear power plant would need to be close to the eastern seaboard. "Where is Mr Howard planning to put it? Is it Townsville or Mackay or perhaps further down along the coastline on the Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast?"Even then a guaranteed water supply to meet minimum safety concerns would be a tall order. "A guarantee like that is tough at the best of times, let alone in the middle of the worst drought on record. "Mr Beattie is on a three-day trip to New Zealand to boost trade and economic ties. Is it time we reduced logging in catchments?
The Age – Oct 29, 2006
Labor and Liberal must start planning for the future now —not when the water has run out. The Liberals have suggested a new dam on the Maribyrnong Riverto boost water supply. They argue the dam would capture excesswater in times of flood and heavy rainfall. But if there was enoughrain to cause floods, wouldn’t the state’s other dams be full?Instead of building a new dam, an easier solution would be toallow the limited water that already falls to reach existingdams. Liberal leader Ted Baillieu has discussed logging in Melbourne’swater catchment with environment groups and has told The SundayAge he would make an announcement about it before theelection. Gavan McFadzean of the Wilderness Society has called on bothLabor and Liberal to end the logging.
