Water treatment plans go public

Minister’s visitOn Tuesday, Mr Finnie was visiting the 120m Katrine Water project at Milngavie, which will supply drinking water to 700,000 people from autumn next year. Its huge underground tank is one of the largest engineering projects undertaken by the Scottish water industry. Water from Glasgow’s traditional supply, Loch Katrine in the Trossachs, will be filtered and treated at Milngavie. The new treatment plant was commissioned to replace Victorian water works and keep up with European standards. It follows a cryptosporidium contamination emergency in Glasgow four years ago in which 160,000 people were told to boil their water.

The party, at its meeting held on Sunday with town secretary K. Madhavan in the chair, passed a resolution in this regard. It stated that of the total number of 22 borewells, 10 were under repair. (The town is totally dependent on ground water) Owing to frequent disruptions in electricity supply, the borewells were rendered unusable, causing great inconvenience to town residents.
