Cape Town comes out tops for clean water
Independent Online – Jun 22, 2006
Cape Town’s 22 waste water treatment works only comply 76 percent of the time with key parameters set by the department of water affairs and Forestry in terms of its permits for waste water discharge. Hloyi told the committee that the monitoring programme at the city’s 11 water treatment works for bulk water supply involved testing 64 844 water samples per year, and there was a 96 percent compliance rate with national water quality standards gazetted last year. Challenges around bulk water included that the water quality at the point of abstraction had deteriorated, which in turn impacted on the cost of treating the water to potable (drinking) standards. A proliferation of algae in major dams like Theewaterskloof and Volvlei affected the water’s taste and odour, and caused toxins. Sampling of the 256 reservoirs and distribution points in the city’s water reticulation system was done weekly, with just fewer than 100 000 physical, microbiological and chemical analyses being done each year. Overall, there was 98 percent compliance with national standards.

Over 50 women, with empty water containers on their heads, took out a rally from the CPI(M) Party Zone I Office in Sunnapu Veedhi to Turner’s Choultry via College Down and Poorna Market. The rally culminated in the dharna at the AE’s office. The demonstrators raised slogans demanding, among other things, supply of drinking water through public taps for one hour every day as promised by the Municipal Commissioner in the past. They said that the duration was being limited to about half an hour everyday even after the commissioner’s assurance. Low pressure The water pressure was also very low which was making it difficult for the residents to get even a couple of pots of drinking water. They said that the borewells on the streets were also not functioning adding to the woes of the residents. They warned that they would have to go on an agitation if the pump house officials do not initiate immediate action on the issue.
