24-hour drinking water supply in 11 wards of Gulbarga soon

GULBARGA: The 24-hour drinking water supply will soon be a reality in Gulbarga with the expected completion of laying new water pipelines in the 11 selected wards of the city under the World Bank-assisted Karnataka Urban Water Sector Improvement Project (KUWASIP) by the end of September. Despite being close to two perennial sources of drinking water in the Bhima and the Bennethora, only a few localities in the city get piped water supply only on alternate days. The new layouts do not have piped water supply because of the faulty pipeline. While the Government had taken up remodelling of drinking water supply pipe system to cover most of the areas, the Chennai-based company, which is implementing the water sector improvement project, plans to provide 24-hour water supply in select areas, which are considered as demonstration zones and later extend the same to the rest of the city. At a council meeting, he said that though the local body was getting less than its actual requirement, it managed to supply water on alternate days or at least once in three days. After the rains last year, the Municipality was receiving around 40 lakh litres a day. On some days, around 54 lakh litres was received, making it possible for the Municipality to supply water every alternative day.

Stalin said his ministry had been according top priority to drinking water schemes in rural areas. “Despite implementation of three drinking water projects, water supply is once a week for Dindigul, that too in the wee hours. This system should be changed. Water should be supplied daily. I have issued an order to Municipal and TWAD Board officials to this effect,” he said. Work on laying a main pipeline of the Cauvery drinking water project across the Amaravathi river should be expedited to maintain regular water supply to Dindigul.
