Ethanol Production May Put Pinch on Water Resources
FOXNews – Jun 19, 2006
The demand for water by the two dozen operating ethanol plants in Iowa has not damaged water sources or supplies, said Monte Shaw, executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association. Improving technology means new plants use as much as 80 percent less water than plants built just five years ago, and most plants recycle their water so it has more than one use, he said. Still, the draw on Midwest water supplies is a concern. “It’s an issue that is certainly at the forefront of our minds,” said Paul VanDorpe, a scientist at the Iowa Geological Survey in Iowa City. But he does not perceive as much concern among the public, he said. The possibility of a new ethanol plant is one reason the city of Aberdeen, S…
, decided to seek new water sources, perhaps from deeper wells, Mayor Mike Levsen said. “We felt that for the current demand we had plenty of water to supply them, but that would begin to run us up to our limit,” he said. Many industries use more than a million gallons of water each day, still far less than the 23 million gallons per day used by Champaign and Urbana or the 500 million gallons per day that Chicago pumps from Lake Michigan. The Mahomet Aquifer, along which several ethanol plants are proposed, has plenty of water. Running across the midsection of the state from the Indiana line to the Illinois River, it supplies an estimated 250 million gallons of water per day to municipalities, industry, farms and homes. That is a pittance given the estimated 13 trillion gallons of water in the aquifer, Wehrmann said.
Human Activities In Arid Urban Environments Can Affect Rainfall And…

"Many of the fastest-growing urban areas are in arid regimes," said Marshall Shepherd, author of the report just published in the online edition of the Journal of Arid Environments. "Because their total rainfall is low, these areas have been largely ignored in studies on how human activities affect the water cycle. But these cities are particularly sensitive to such changes, since the water supply is so critical. "The research was funded by the Precipitation Measurement Missions program of the U. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Cities in arid areas are excellent models for understanding human-induced changes in the water cycle.

Tracing the history of the water supply scheme in the southern suburbs, he recalled that the foundation stone for an integrated scheme to supply water to Pallavaram, Alandur, Pammal, Anakaputhur, St. Thomas Mount cum Pallavaram Cantonment Board and Chitlapakkam by the Tamil Nadu Water supply and Drainage Board was laid in April 1972 by Chief Minister M. Under the scheme, the TWAD Board was to supply 225 lakh litres of water a day from the Palar river, including 67. 5 lakh litres (and later revised to 54 lakh litres) to Pallavaram Municipality…

Under the scheme, the TWAD Board was to supply 225 lakh litres of water a day from the Palar river, including 67. 5 lakh litres (and later revised to 54 lakh litres) to Pallavaram Municipality. But it failed to supply the 54 lakh litres a day, said Mr. The Pallavaram Municipality received only 27 lakh litres of water a day.

The agitation at Okha, where people of towns including Okha, Surajkaradi, Arambhada, Bet and Dwarka, are on a fast protesting against the irregular water supply entered fifth day on Friday. 5 litres of water per head daily even as water supply in the region is not regular, said Rajubhai Dave, convener of Nagrik Samiti. According to reports, while Gujarat Water Supply and Sewage Board claims to supply 500 lakh litres of water per day, Okha nagarpalika receives hardly 200 lakh liters. B Vaghasia, deputy engineer with the GWSSB, pins the blame on fast decreasing water level in Vartu dam for the irregular water supply. There may be some water loss due to the pipeline, he said.
