Water dispute threat to new homes
BBC News – Jun 17, 2006
In Northants 52,100 homes are to be built in Kettering, Wellingborough, Corby and surrounding villages by 2021. Kettering MP Philip Hollobone said Rutland water should supply the water but a project to create new habitat is causing planning permission delays. “Rutland County Council is reluctant to grant required permissions to extract more water until the habitat questions are settled, causing delays,” he said. New extractions need planning permission because the reservoir is protected by the EU Habitats Regulations. Extra water neededThe MP said: “Rutland County Council has very recently deferred the planning application for the habitat creation and indeed may end up not grant planning permission at all. “That will have the potential of causing huge delays to current projects which will see more building here than in other parts of the Milton Keynes and south Midlands growth areas…
Extra water neededThe MP said: “Rutland County Council has very recently deferred the planning application for the habitat creation and indeed may end up not grant planning permission at all. “That will have the potential of causing huge delays to current projects which will see more building here than in other parts of the Milton Keynes and south Midlands growth areas. “It will also affect the security of water supply for all those who live in Northamptonshire. “This is clearly an issue of huge concern for all of us who live in the county. “Plans to build a total of 145,000 houses across the county in the next 15 years are going to require a huge amount of extra water. “The government either needs to ensure that future water supplies are secured or scale back the development plans.

MALNUTRITION STILL NOT CONFIRMED IN BHANDUP, BUT FOOD, WATER SUPPLY…

js’>The panel is expected to file its report in 10 days. Another glaring discrepancy was found to be erratic water supply. We went to check the availability of basic amenities in the three areas. The main problem seems to be the ration shops, said SHRC Secretary Amitabh Chandra. It seems the ration shops picked up grains but did not distribute them. We have asked the controller of rations to inquire into the matter…
The three-member panel visited the Chamunda Nagar, Sham Nagar and Bhavani Nagar slums to investigate a complaint filed before the SHRC in June 13, by former Member of Parliament Kirit Somaiya and the civic Health Committee. In the complaint, the Health Committee and Somaiya had raised concerns about the governments failure to provide food to the slumdwellers, despite the fact that they had valid ration cards. As for water supply, the team found that the Sham Nagar and Bhavani Nagar slums had water connections. But Chamunda Nagar does not have a tap point and, as such, the residents have no ready access to drinking water. The SHRC is also now investigating the health and hygiene conditions in the area. We were told that about 150 children were inspected yesterday. They have colds and coughs, but there does not seem to be any malnutrition, Chandra said.

Government favours more auto gas outlets
Hindu – Jun 17, 2006
The Minister said that the Centre had insisted that at least 100 metres X 100 metres area be reserved for opening a auto gas outlet while the State Government had requested it to reduce it to 30 mt X 40 mt. Karjol, who also holds the portfolio of rural water supply, said the Government had reduced the burden of the cess on the local bodies in the implementation of the rural water supply schemes from 10 per cent to 2. 5 per cent offering to bear the remaining 7. He said that this concession pertained only for pumping of water from its sources to the tanks while the cost of supplying water from the tanks to individual houses in rural areas would have to be borne by the local bodies. He said that of the budgetary allocation of Rs.

Canteen water problem, say bus drivers
Norwich Evening News – Jun 17, 2006
” Another added: “We have even got bottled water to make our tea and coffee with. “But Dave Stuart, Norwich bus manager at Surrey Street, said the illness suffered by one driver had most likely been caused by a stomach bug. Tina Rust, asset manager for Norfolk County Council, which runs park and ride services, said: “We have carried out tests on the water supply serving the Thickthorn park and ride site, as a precaution, after being told a bus driver had become ill and expressed the view that this could be linked to the drinking water used by drivers (and not available to passengers) on site. We understand the driver concerned has not taken any time off sick. “We have now had the test results back from the independent laboratory and they clearly show there is nothing unusual about the water, which, we are advised, is safe to drink. “Health and safety at our sites is always a top priority and the situation will continue to be monitored over the next few days, but we would stress the water at Thickthorn is supplied from the Anglian Water mains water supply and is deemed safe for drinking purposes. “We have now been told that drivers from the same company have raised similar concerns about the water at the Costessey park and ride.

coli bacteria in the well water used by about 15,000 people, even though water samples taken by the company Wednesday showed its presence. Follow-up test results released Friday found no contamination. “We suspect the (original) samples were contaminated during handling, and the water supply was never contaminated,” said Norma Arceo, spokeswoman for the state Department of Health Services. Nonetheless, the brief bacteria scare further angered residents already upset.
