For residents here, piped water supply remains a dream
Hindu – Jun 13, 2006
Although most parts of the city enjoy piped water supply this year, it remains a dream for these residents. Residents complain that in spite of having Metrowater pipe connections, even the use of a handpump does not yield water. The Metrowater Board terms these areas “defective” or “tail-end”, often citing lack of pressure as the reason for no piped water supply. However, residents demand that concrete steps be taken to rectify the problem. “Since December 2000 we have not received piped water. We were hoping that at least this year we would get piped supply due to the good rains,” said N. Venkateswaran, president of Natesan Street Exnora.

Meanwhile, the initiative rolled along with backers gathering far more signatures than necessary, which effectively allowed Democrat leaders to hold the line on dams. The Metropolitan Water District has not taken a position on the measure. Other major funding categories include: $1. 28 billion for water supply and water quality programs, $928 million for river and lake protection, $800 million for flood, $540 million for clean beaches and bays, $450 million for wildlife and forest conservation, and $400 million for parks.
