TWAD Board to train officials in forming rural water supply panels
Hindu – May 28, 2006
Towards this direction, the Board has constituted an exclusive Communication and Capacity Development Unit (CCDU), comprising officials of the TWAD Board to conduct the training programme. The CCDU would train officials from all departments, who in turn, would percolate it to their subordinates. As these committees would be empowered for implementation of need-based and demand-driven water supply projects and also their maintenance, the Board has taken all precautionary measures to identify capable members and volunteers, non-governmental organisations, women members, elected representatives of grass-root level local bodies. “The CCDU is responsible only for capacity-building exercise than the implementation of water supply scheme, as identification of right volunteers is more important for proper selection of a rural water supply scheme, source besides its sustainability”, said its Director, G.

But wait there was a time when contaminated (read sewerage) water was a problem that the backward areas of the city experienced. Now this is a problem that has hit places in Nazimabad and Clifton as well. In fact, I am told that some residents in Nazimabad No 4 have been forced to pay for new water supply lines as the concerned authorities have been unable to solve the problem of water contamination through sewerage lines. Even the water tankers were supplying unsafe water. The concerned authorities did take notice of the problem but said that they could not help really, until October this year. Helpless citizens became brave! And see what happened in Clifton area (in Block 9) in the Naval Housing Scheme last month. Thousands of residents were getting contaminated water, obviously smelly and coloured, for drinking purposes, and the reason was that sewerage water had entered the water supply lines.
