In this area, we have had hosepipe and sprinkler restrictions for more than a year, but what is being done to improve the situation? Where are the plans for new reservoirs, desalination plants and links to other water companies to create a national grid of water supplies? If gas can be pumped from Russia, surely water can be pumped from Wales or Scotland, where it is in plentiful supply. It would appear that the water company is just praying for more rain, instead of investing in new supplies. Bill Ridley, Caterham, Surrey. How have the water companies managed to manoeuvre themselves into a position whereby they can provide profits to their shareholders, but appear unable to maintain a supply of water to their customers at the time of year when it is most needed? Summer has not started, but already panic buttons are being pushed.

At the bottom of every one of the welter of news stories, there’s always that tiny giveaway paragraph with the real story. Thames Water supplies 2,700 million litres of water a day to London – but loses 900 million of them a day in leaks from the dodgy old pipes it can’t be bothered to mend (even the one under its own headquarters which went unplugged for 8 months). That’s a third of the city’s daily water supply. We’d have to sacrifice an awful lot of loo flushes and wilting begonias to make up for the company’s wastefulness. No wonder water companies, which also put our water bills up by twice the rate of inflation, made record profits last year. As I mutter my Meldrewish way through the drought scare stories, I hear a furtive “psst” from over the fence.

The result is a condition known as demand-driven drought that may catch more water managers and residents off-guard in coming years. The study, which appeared in a recent issue of Journal of the American.
