Daily water supply restored in Mysore
Hindu – Apr 22, 2006
Jayakumar criticised the officials of the corporation during a review meeting on Tuesday and warned them of “suspension if they failed to restore daily water supply within three days. Two major rivers are near Mysore and the water level at the Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir is 30 feet above the level that prevailed during the corresponding period last year. But Vani Vilas Water Works cited its inability to supply water daily and reverted to supplying water on alternate days that led to a hue and cry among the public. Jayakumar said that he could not comprehend the reason for the drinking water scarcity plaguing the city and refused to pay heed to the arguments of the officials that water supply was affected due to the faulty distribution network. He directed them to restore the system of daily water supply within three days. Jayakumar said that he could not comprehend the reason for the drinking water scarcity plaguing the city and refused to pay heed to the arguments of the officials that water supply was affected due to the faulty distribution network. He directed them to restore the system of daily water supply within three days. However, the corporation officials pointed out that though the system of daily water supply had been restored, the water pumping pressure was less and might not provide for adequate storage. Earlier, water was pumped to a few select areas of the city and it enabled to sustain good pressure and help people to fill overhead tanks. But daily supply would result in water distributed all over the city and many residential localities in higher areas might not receive water at all, they said. The officials said there were no complaints from any locality on Friday.

KARACHI: Many city areas hit by water shortage
Pakistan Dawn – Apr 22, 2006
com ———- –>KARACHI: Many city areas hit by water shortageBy Azizullah SharifKARACHI, April 21: The water supply position in various parts of the city continues to deteriorate, forcing residents of water-starved localities to either purchase water from private tankers at exorbitant rates or drink sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health. Though most parts of the city have either been getting scant supply or are without water for over a month, KWSB officials concerned were suggesting the residents of affected localities and multi-storied apartment buildings to apply for new water connections once the city would start getting 100 million gallons of water per day from the K-III project. Inquiries made in this regard showed that some KWSB engineers were concentrating more on the projects being undertaken under Tameer-i-Karachi Programme instead of giving top priority to their basic task of ensuring equal distribution of water in the localities. It was further learnt that the main cause of deteriorating water supply situation in most parts of the city was that KWSB engineers, who often remain occupied with the projects being carried out under the TKP, had literally given the entire valve operation under the control of valve-men…

It was further learnt that the main cause of deteriorating water supply situation in most parts of the city was that KWSB engineers, who often remain occupied with the projects being carried out under the TKP, had literally given the entire valve operation under the control of valve-men. In absence of supervision, the valve-men of various localities were managing the valve operation system at their whim. Residents of affected localities complained that valve-men were heavily bribed by certain builders or unions of multi-storied apartment buildings on monthly basis for tempering with valve operation at the cost of others residing in the nearby houses or apartments. Mentioning about persisting water shortage in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, a resident of a multi-storied building said that when he lodged a complaint with KWSB Managing Director Brig Iftikhar Haider, he immediately sent the XEN (Water-I) to look into the lingering water issue of his apartment building where 575 families reside, but the official expressed his inability to improve water supply situation, instead he suggested that a well should be dug up to overcome the water shortage or apply for one more water connection after the city starts getting 100mgd of water from K-III project.

Customer Service Is Still Job No. 1
Washington Post – Apr 22, 2006
To determine whether the unit was connected to hot or cold water, a home inspector would need to turn off the supply valve at the water heater. This, however, would be an unusual procedure because connection to the cold-water supply is a rare problem. In homes where the water heater is far from the kitchen, connecting the dishwasher to the hot-water supply might be of no benefit because the water in the long supply pipe is likely to become cold. In your case, the builder and plumber should have taken responsibility for an obvious construction defect, especially since this was a new home. It might be worthwhile to test the case in small-claims court. Barry Stone is a professional home inspector. If you have questions or comments, contact him through his Web site,.

WATER CRISIS: Perth supply dilemma as $5m taskforce rules out canal,…
NEWS.com.au – Apr 22, 2006
“But the WA public is smarter than that and knows that desalination is not the answer and they know that in 10 to 20 years we will need to bring water south. “Our mining industry is going through its peak now, our resources are being depleted at an alarming rate and our farmland is suffering salinity. Where will our state be in 50 years’ time without a solution to the water crisis?”Mr Bridge, who has advocated a pipeline for the past 20 years, said developing water resources in the north would not only help Perth, but also help develop inland areas where big populations could live if they had access to the vital resource. On Friday, Premier Alan Carpenter said he had yet to see the findings, but if costs were astronomical the idea of bringing water from the north would be quashed. “If it stacks up financially and environmentally, that’s OK, but if it doesn’t we will have to move on from the idea,” he said. “We can’t keep playing with an idea that is not going to work. He said it was better to work on a number of strategies to solve the water crisis, rather than one.
