Residents in the added areas of the city, particularly Dadhagapatti, Annathanapatti and Ammapet, are suffering a lot due to the inadequate water supply. Residents claim: “Even if the corporation supplies water, we find it difficult to draw sufficient quantity as the supply barely lasts an hour. ”

The Corporation can assure frequent water supply only when it gets additional quantity of water. “The present water supply schemes were designed for the needs of the population when Salem was a municipality. Once we implement the dedicated water supply scheme, the water supply problems can be sorted out easily,” says the Corporation Commissioner, T.

URS lands contract to design repairs for delta levees SF engineering…
San Francisco Chronicle – Mar 15, 2006
The San Francisco engineering company landed a state contract worth roughly $6 million to $8 million to plan fixes for eroded spots on the 1,600-mile levee system. Schwarzenegger declared an emergency last month to speed levee repairs at 24 locations. URS will perform design work on 16 of those, said Les Harder, the acting deputy director for public safety at the California Department of Water Resources, which hired URS. Other companies will make the repairs, with the work scheduled to finish by the end of the year. “Because of the declared emergency, we wanted to get working as fast as possible,” Harder said. The state will pay URS an additional $6 million to study flooding risks in the delta and devise long-term solutions. That project — which will examine the threats posed by earthquakes, storms and climate change — will take three years to complete… So far, however, federal officials have been cool to his request, despite pressure from California’s senators. The delta levees shield farm fields, reclaimed from the marsh, that now rest below sea level. But the earthen dams also play a key role in protecting much of the state’s drinking water supply, drawn from the rivers feeding into the delta. Should a major earthquake shatter many of the levees, state officials fear that saltwater could taint the drinking water supply. has a long history of government contracting. The company, with 29,000 employees worldwide, has a long-standing contract with the Federal Emergency Management Administration to provide logistical support after disasters.
Fear water supply set to be cut off

And in a letter to ward councillor Mark Morris, Lewisham Council’s executive director for regeneration Malcolm Smith has warned at least 5,000 residents could be cut off from the mains supplywhile repairs are carried out. But Thames Water has told News Shopper it is in the process of carrying out a risk assessment and looking at ways to prevent shutting the mains off. It hopes to re-route the supply from another part of the network instead. But residents and passers-by are increasingly concerned. Downham Community Centre manager Cliff Shirley, 54, said: “It has been at least five weeks and hundreds of gallons of water have been escaping. “It’s ridiculous we are told to conserve water when this amount of water is pumping out here. “Thames Water needs to get its own house in order.
