Government urged to order release of water into dam
Hindu – Mar 14, 2006
Giving details on the condition of the standing summer crops in the command areas of the TLBC, it has suggested that the Government release six tmcft of water to extend water supply in the TLBC for a fortnight. The issue is likely to come up for discussion at the Tungabhadra Irrigation Consultative Committee (ICC) meeting slated to be held at Bangalore on Wednesday. The ICC, at a meeting in November, decided to suspend water supply in the TLBC by March 31 after taking into account the storage level in the reservoir. On Monday, the water level at the Tungabhadra reservoir was 1,594. 57 ft with storage of about 14. Of which, 10 tmcft of water is available for TLBC, which would suffice to maintain water supply in the canal till March-end… Pressure

Making water available for all
Taipei Times – Mar 14, 2006
In some countries, new water infrastructure may mean canals, pumping stations and levees. Other nations might need deeper reservoirs, more modern filtration plants or improved water transport schemes. These can all potentially be designed to improve and expand water supplies for power generation, irrigation, and household and industrial use, while providing security against droughts and protection from floods. The key to successfully increasing investment in water infrastructure is an equal increase of investment in water institutions. Badly managed infrastructure will do little to improve peoples’ health or support economic growth, so water development and water management must go hand in hand. Water infrastructure can and must be developed in parallel with sound institutions, good governance, attention to the environment and an equitable sharing of costs and benefits. A water investment policy that reduces the vulnerability of the poor and offers basic water security for all will require customized planning and an effective partnership of donor countries, developing country governments, the private sector and local communities.

The innovative design is based on Ecosphere’s experience gained filtering water for the City of Waveland after Katrina. Waveland Mayor Tommy Longo asked Ecosphere to provide his community with clean water for drinking, bathing, cooking, and cleaning purposes as the City suffered catastrophic damage to its water supply system from Katrina’s 40-foot waves and 150 mph winds. UltraStrip’s Mobile Emergency Filtration System operated successfully for six weeks in Waveland until the community was able to rebuild its water supply system.
