He said the government had allocated Rs8 billion for the clean water project to stop the spread of water-borne diseases. President Musharraf directed early installation of plants in high-density population areas. He also directed regular monitoring to evaluate and ensure the quality of the filtered water. The president was briefed on the project under which water purification plants would be installed in every tehsil of the country. The federal and provincial governments were coordinating for the timely completion of the project.
24/7 water scheme proves useless
Times of India – Dec 3, 2006
The scheme has not
only disrupted the regular water supply in the two demo zones but also in the
city. The miseries have been further aggravated with installation of pump houses
at Anandnagar in Vadgoan. Many more pump houses are yet to
come. The water scheme does not
mention about the tariffs the residents are supposed to pay. Earlier, people
were opposed to flat rates and had not paid their water tariffs for years… “Earlier we used to get water twice a week at flat
rates now but, now our plight has deteriorated,” says one of the
residents. Sadashivnagar and
surrounding areas, which also come in the north demo zone, expect to get water
regularly. Given the earlier projects of KUWSDB, “We doubt if water supply will
be regular as this a demonstration project,” says Ranjit
Chougule. The old city, which
does not come in either of the demo zones, is the worst- affected, as water
supply system and timetable has collapsed. Earlier, we used to approach the
Belgaum City Corporation office and officials concerned if there were
large-scale interruptions. “But, with the Board taking over, we are yet to know
the officials concerned so that they can be dealt with for water supply,” says
Sanjay Walwalkar, a city resident.

The main feature of the rehabilitated water supply scheme is the emphasis on tapping the water directly from the source, Vaoria hill spring by laying of the 14. 50 km long pipeline and connecting it with a composite treatment units of settling tank cum service reservoir. Envisaged to equip with altogether three treatment units, the water supply scheme expected to cater to the need of providing safe drinking water to 9493 population by 2016. A day ahead of the inaugural of the rehabilitated water supply scheme, PHE Minister accompanied by the two MLAs and other officials of PHED also inspected the progress of the construction being taken up for providing drinking water at two places in Senapati district headquarters with funding under Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) and similar projects being taken up at Maram centre and Mao.
Holy Water
New York Times – Dec 3, 2006
Embraced by the church, pagan mythology was transformed from the satanic to the Arcadian. Ancient myths pictorialized the Edenic innocence of nature, while simultaneously reinforcing the story of Rome’s origins. Even Acqua Vergine, the Trevi’s water supply, formed part of this tableau: the source was named for a young maiden who saved a Roman platoon by leading the soldiers to a spring about eight miles east of town. In these sweet waters, the legend of a virtuous pagan girl mingles with the Christian Queen of Heaven.
Water â’” brace for stage three
The Age – Dec 3, 2006
Stage-three water restrictions would mean manual wateringsystems could not be used to water gardens, and dripper wateringsystems and hoses fitted with trigger nozzles could only be usedfor four hours a day to water gardens, two days a week. Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu committed during the electioncampaign to move immediately to stage-three water restrictions. Mr Baillieu’s spokesman, Nicholas McGowan, yesterday called onthe Bracks Government to do more to improve Melbourne’s watersupplies.
River Jordan: Sacred, tainted and dying.

A few hundred yards downstream beyond an earthen dam, a pipe spews raw sewage into the riverbed, next to a canal dumping saline water collected from springs. With the fresh river water blocked by the dam, all that flows on is a polluted, salty stream meandering 60 miles south to the Dead Sea. The Jordan, venerated by Christians as the place where Jesus was baptized and the scene of many biblical narratives, is dying, depleted by water projects in Israel, Jordan and Syria. “A river that is holy to half of humanity has become little more than an open sewage canal,” said Gidon Bromberg, Israeli director of.

Small Acts of Sex and Electricity
Lise Haines
Unbridled Books, 244 pages, $23. 95
It is a sad fact in a woman's life that few of her female friendships go unscorched by the embers of slow-burning envy. No matter how kindred their spirits, female friends risk burnout if a sudden rush of love, success or money upsets the careful equilibrium between them. Mattie, the protagonist in Lise Haines' compelling “Small Acts of Sex and Electricity,” has long envied the charmed life of her beautiful best friend, Jane. As a child neglected by her own parents, Mattie competed for the attentions of Franny, Jane's glamorous grandmother, and later, secretly, for the heart of Jane's husband, Mike. Although Mattie has never made her jealousies known to Jane, it's clear their unspoken rivalry has eroded the tender moments that once buttressed their friendship.
