Special meeting to tackle water problem in Mysore
Hindu – Feb 28, 2006
The council meeting witnessed a heated debate on this problem after Leader of the Opposition Nagendra raised the issue and questioned the Mayor’s ability to find a solution to the problem. “Though the city is reeling under a drinking water shortage for more than six months, the Mayor has done little to solve this issue. With more than half the city going without water supply for days, corporators are finding it difficult to face people in their localities,” he said. Nagendra’s complaint on water scarcity was endorsed by several corporators, cutting across party lines. The corporators feared that the shortage of drinking water will worsen with the onset of summer. Executive engineer of Vani Vilas Water Works (VVWW) Rangaswamy, who was summoned to reply to the complaints of the corporators, blamed the frequent disruption in electricity supply for the irregular water supply in the city.

Diesel oil spill at reservoir leaves thousands without water
Ireland Online – Feb 28, 2006
Homes, business and schools in Strokestown, Elphin, Rooskey, Tarmonbarry and adjoining areas are among those without any running water until at least Thursday morning. Kieran Madden, senior engineer with Roscommon County Council, today said he was almost 100% satisfied that the spillage of diesel oil was accidental but investigations are continuing. It is believed tanks were being filled which overflowed into a local stream which ran into the lake, the water supply for the area, but those responsible did not realise the consequences of the incident. The first the council knew about the polluted lake was when an officer spotted diesel yesterday morning. Mr Madden told RTE radio: ?Specialists are currently trying to skim the diesel off the lake and cleaning down the reservoir and will take today and tomorrow to get that clean. Then the lake and its source will be examined again.
Water Wars: Climate change may spark conflict

Palestinian consumption is severely restricted by Israel. Turkey and Syria Turkish plans to build dams on the Euphrates River brought the country to the brink of war with Syria in 1998. Damascus accused Ankara of deliberately meddling with their water supply as the country lies downstream of Turkey, who accused Syria of sheltering key Kurdish separatist leaders. Water shortages driven by global warming will pile on the pressure in this volatile region. China and India The Brahmaputra River has caused tension between India and China and could be a flashpoint for two of the world’s biggest armies. In 2000, India accused China of not sharing information of the river’s status in the run up to landslides in Tibet which caused floods in northeastern India and Bangladesh. Chinese proposals to divert the river have concerned Delhi.
